Launched in 2006, the Youth Entrepreneur Mentorship Program (YEMP) is a 6-week summer program where local youth are mentored by Myrtle Avenue business owners. Business owners get an extra set of hands helping in their businesses and the teens gain valuable paid summer work experiences while also participating in workshops about entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and other professional development related topics.

Approximately 15-20 students are selected to participate each summer, with the majority living or attending school near Myrtle Avenue.

YEMP Highlights

  • Since 2006, over 200 local teens have successfully completed the program
  • Over 70 small businesses and merchants on Myrtle Avenue have served as employers and mentors in the program
  • YEMP has overwhelmingly served as a first-time work experience for participating youth

Funding for the 2022 YEMP program was provided by The Gilbert Rivera Charitable Foundation, Con Edison, and the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership. Initial support for the program was provided by the JP Morgan Chase Foundation.
