New Businesses on Myrtle: 3 Are Here, 3 Still On the Way
Two of the new businesses are the endeavors of first-time entrepreneurs, 1 is the relocation of a much-loved local restaurant, another is an expansion of a biz that has been around for 26 years. The majority are locally-owned. Be sure to stop in at all, pop your heads in to welcome the owners and managers of the newest businesses on the block.
Green In Bklyn (432 Myrtle) is a one-stop green home goods store opening on Earth Day, April 22nd. The store, according to its owner, Elissa Olin will provide eco-friendly solutions for daily living. Products available will be everything from light bulbs to cleaning supplies to bed linens to recycled paper towels to baby diapers and baby bottles—all eco-friendly, of course. Elissa has a long work history as a performing artist and caterer. Green living has long been an important part of her life and she is looking forward to sharing that passion with the neighborhood. Elissa lives on the border of Bed-Stuy and Clinton Hill and is excited that she can walk to work and “loves the opportunity to make a difference where I live.” Elissa’s business plan for Green In Bklyn was a top winner in the 2008 Brooklyn Public Library’s Power Up Business Plan Competition.
Myrtle Thai (438 Myrtle) is moving east, east along Myrtle, that is. It is leaving its digs at 412 Myrtle and moving into a “smaller, more intimate space,” according to its owners, Vat and Linda Buakaew. Work on the new space is pressing forward and the owners hope to be up and running in the new space by May 1st. Myrtle Thai will continue to serve delectable, traditional Thai dishes, such as Karee (jasmine rice and meat served sautéed w/onion, pea, potato, tomato, egg and curry powder); Panang (rice with meat or vegetables w/string beans, bell peppers and kaffir and basil leaf); and the famous national dish, Pad Thai. All still delicious and fashioned after Vat’s mom’s great home cooking in Bangsaka, Thailand. For now, you can contact Myrtle Thai at 718.422.1142.
Clinton Hill Animal Clinic (476 Myrtle) is the second outpost for owner, Dr. Pamella Dendtler who has been open for not quite two months on Myrtle Avenue. After 26 years of animal care in Park Slope, Dr. Dendtler has expanded her practice to treat our furry loved ones of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill. Dr. Dendtler and Dr. Monica Johnson, a doctor of internal medicine and surgery are pleased to be able to treat cats, large dogs, small dogs, birds and exotic pets. They offer internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, orthopedic surgery, digital x-rays, sonograms, treatment of skin disorders, vaccines, Hill’s prescription diets, house calls (yea, house calls!) and more. An open house is planned very soon. The Clinic can be reached at 718.623.3999.
Health First Medical Supply (322 Myrtle) is the business endeavor of owners – Emmanuel Alada and Denise Hudson. Having worked in the medical supply business for 7 years prior, Emmanuel began to learn and love the business and thought, why not bring such a business to his own neighborhood. Health First Medical provides home medical equipment: power and manual wheelchairs, hospital beds, bathroom safety equipment, respiratory and diabetic products, amongst other offerings. Though they are awaiting additional inventory, they are officially open for business. Walk-ins are welcome. They can be reached at 718.596.6204.
Domino’s Pizza’s (328 Myrtle) phone is ringing off the hook in Fort Greene/Clinton Hill and the immediate surrounds. The Domino’s on Myrtle is a corporate store and area supervisor, Ron Brezzell, says the store is well received by the neighborhood. He says Domino’s had been looking on Myrtle Avenue for quite some time and when the opportunity came to close the Atlantic Avenue store and move to a larger locale, Myrtle Avenue-bound they were. Domino’s has been open for business on the Avenue for about 3 months now. They can be reached at 718.522.3733.
Metro PCS (518 Myrtle) is a new cellular phone business, next door to Blockbuster and the post office. According to a Crain's NY article published two weeks ago, Dallas-based Metro PCS Communications Inc. was "the surprise winner in a 2006 auction of $3.6 billion worth of licenses covering the New York area." The company’s network covers 10 million customers in the New York metropolitan area, including the five boroughs and portions of Bergen, Hudson, Union and Essex counties in New Jersey. Though we have tried to reach out to the owners, including calls to the company’s Dallas-based headquarters, the only update comes from someone waiting inside the store for a delivery a week or two ago, “we thought we would be open by now; we are expecting to have our doors open possibly any day now.”
