Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Give a Neighbor a Turkey!

Will you help local families this Thanksgiving by supporting our turkey drive? Our goal is to provide turkeys and Thanksgiving groceries to 1200 families!

The Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership is supporting One Community and many partners who operate the weekly Fort Greene Fresh Pantry, serving families from Farragut, Whitman, Ingersoll, and Atlantic Terminal Houses year-round. With your help, this November, each family that visits the pantry ahead of Thanksgiving on November 18 will also get a turkey and traditional sides for their holiday meal.

ABOUT THE PANTRY

Since 2015, the Fort Greene & Farragut Fresh Pantry has been providing free groceries to neighbors and this year has seen demand grow nearly significantly. Through the pandemic, we moved to a delivery model and distributed over 1,500,000 lbs of food through 60,000 home deliveries. We continue serving families in need every weekend at three different pick-up pantry locations near the four NYCHA campuses in Fort Greene.

Myrtle Avenue + NStat

Myrtle Avenue + NStat

Since late 2022, Myrtle Avenue has been the implementing partner of the Mayor’s Action Plan (MAP) NeighborhoodStat (NStat) program at the Ingersoll and Whitman houses.  NStat is a city-funded, locally-based program that encourages resident leadership and provides resources for the community to create solutions for public safety and to increase engagement.  Those solutions are funded with $30,000 that is up for each NYCHA community to spend.

On Thursday, July 6, Whitman residents came together at a carnival, organized by Myrtle Avenue and the Whitman NStat stakeholders, for the community to brainstorm and submit ideas for using this funding.  The carnival was an incredible event with bounce houses, games, rides, crafts, food and more.  Ideas can be submitted by anyone over the age of 5 and those will then be aggregated into a ballot for the whole Whitman community to vote on later this month.

While NStat is new to Whitman, Ingersoll has been participating for several years and the community has spent the money on public art, youth art programming, intergenerational healing events and more.

Myrtle Avenue is proud to facilitate this resident-led program and to help empower communities to have an impact and make change.

Welcome our New Executive Director!

Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership is thrilled to welcome our new Executive Director, Amanda Zenteno!  She has a long history of community advocacy and non-profit work, including leadership experience with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy, the Brooklyn Public Library, Adam Street Foundation and, most recently, the Bay Ridge 5th Avenue Business Improvement District.

Amanda spearheaded the opening of a new Adult Learning Center in East New York and helped secure Work Force Innovation and Opportunities Act (WIOA) funding for increased ESOL and PreHSE programming for students throughout the borough. As Executive Director for the Bay Ridge 5 th Avenue BID, she increased funding with multiyear grant awards, individual giving, and event sponsorships. Amanda is very proud of her community building work in Bay Ridge. Her efforts led Bay Ridge to be the first in the nation to install Ramadan lighting that acknowledged and celebrated the neighborhoods diversity. As a result, many other New York City neighborhoods were inspired and are now making Ramadan lights a new tradition. By increasing community partners, Amanda has built the largest community Iftar in the city, expanded street events, and worked tirelessly to improve the lives and livelihood of small business owners.

As a strong believer in the power of business improvement districts to create thriving commercial corridors, Amanda holds the position of co-chair of the BID Association Mentoring Committee. Her work establishes professional development opportunities for all NYC BIDS and creates a space for Executive Directors and BID staff to share skills, knowledge and support.  Amanda is very excited to be part of the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership team to continue and grow their many successful programs that support small businesses and the community.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

Block By Block

We love keeping things looking nice and clean around Myrtle and we are fortunate to have a Block by Block to help us! This hardworking team helps to make sure trash is picked up, graffiti is painted over and that all of our public spaces are clean, comfortable and operating at their best. We love working with Block by Block and are lucky to have a team that enjoys and cares for Myrtle Avenue as much as we do! If you see the team out in their orange uniforms, give them a shout out for all the hard work they do!

Now Open: Casa Nono

Casa Nono joins Myrtle Avenue from the same team as Osteria Brooklyn.  Classic Mexican, with modern twist. Menu highlights include their homemade tortillas, which are also used to make chips for salsa and guacamole and a complimentary quesadilla bite.  Also don’t miss their cheesy enchiladas, delicious molé and cloud-like coconut cake.  Casa Nono also has an extensive tequila selection and excellent cocktails.

Now Open: Lula Mae

Lula Mae is now open on Myrtle Avenue!  Lula Mae serves Southeastern Asian food that’s meant to be shared.  Some stand out dishes include oysters, lort cha- Cambodian rice noodles, stir fired morning glory and the 50-50 fried chicken (photo above).  There’s also a delicious cocktail menu!  The vibe is cozy but sophisticated and there’s a private room in the back which can be rented out.
