Move About Myrtle on hold this year….

Usually at this time of year, were making announcements about our annual street events, Move About Myrtle, calling for community ideas and reach out to local partners. After reviewing feedback from merchants and other stakeholders, we have decided not to hold Move About Myrtle this year. Although we, and many local residents, enjoyed all the activities and programs that were possible in this temporary public space, we think that the DOT Weekend Walks program as currently constructed may not be the best fit for our commercial strip. The permit for this event is somewhat restrictive, and currently does not allow for some of the activities that we and some merchants would like to create. We will continue to review other options, and will consider bringing back a street event in 2012. In the meantime, wed like to hear from you. Tell us your ideas for events, block parties and other activities youd like to see take place on the avenue in the future. Email us at info@myrtleavenue.org.

At the same time, we recognize the value that a street event brings in terms of building community, and providing safe space for play and gathering of neighbors. We know that many local block associations already organize block parties on blocks just north and south of Myrtle in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, and we would like to support your efforts to continue to do so. Heres how we might be able to help:
” After a few years of organizing Move About Myrtle and the Brooklyn Urban Arts Market, weve assembled an extensive contact list of local organizations that might be willing to provide programs or activities for block parties for either a small fee or sometimes for free. Wed be happy to put you in touch with them.
” Weve learned quite a bit about permitting for street closures, amplified sound and other things. We can provide advice and point you to the agencies that can help you get your necessary permits.
” Our new Community Builders Mini-Grant Program would provide small grants to support community-based and community-organized programs and events. These grants would be small (no larger than $250), and could be applied to activities that are public, free, and benefit or improve the areas of Fort Greene or Clinton Hill north of Myrtle Avenue. Download the Community Builders Mini-Grant Guidelines and Application here.

More about Dots and Dashes :
Dots and Dashes, is an exhibition about patterns and
their place within systems. The exhibition title refers to
the series of tones that comprise Morse Code – a method
of transmitting textual data. The artworks displayed in
Dots and Dashes reveal an affinity for repetitive mark
making and recurring formal elements. Some of the works
faithfully communicate the complexity of patterns found
in nature and man made structures, while others distill this
complexity into simple geometric forms. Organic systems,
diagrams of consumption, maps, and human history are
among the many issues explored through the selected
artworks. Dots and Dashes is curated by Christina Vassallo

Who's Your Daddy?

10% off all spirits featured at the tasting

Prichard's Double Barrel Bourbon- Kelso, Tennessee (750ml) – $64

Most Bourbon comes out of the barrel at about 125 proof and then is watered down to lower the alcohol content. Prichard's limited release, double-barrel bourbon comes out of the cask, gets a dose of water, and then goes back into new, charred oak barrels. The result is a 95 proof bourbon with undiluted flavors that are complex and classy, highlighted by smooth vanilla notes and a touch of spice.

Tobermory 10 Year Limited Edition – Isle of Mull, Scotland (750ml) – $38
Smooth and velvety up front, with tangy fruit, exquisite gingerbread spice and a hint of aniseed. The finish brings in layers of fresh oak, baker's chocolate, almond and a little seaspray.

Redemption Rye Whiskey (750ml) – Bardstown, KY – $28
Redemption starts with a mash of 95% premium rye and then ages for over two years in new charred oak barrels. Despite its bold 92 proof, Redemtion is a smooth, sophisticated spirit thats also manages to preserve (or even saves – if you will – and we know you will) Rye's rustic soul. Makes a terrific Manhattan or Sazerac – but is also just right on its own.

Friday, June 17th, 6-9pm

There's a poet in every dad

W.B. Yeats advocated for Irish independence, but he proabably didn't have a problem with whiskey from Northern Ireland…And neither will dad.

Irish Whiskey

10% off Bushmills during the tasting

Bushmills Black Bush Irish Whiskey – Ireland (750ml) – $40
With an intriguing flavor and a name to match, Bushmills special blend combines malt whiskey matured in former Oloroso Sherry casks with a sweet, batch-distilled grain whiskey. This unique recipe gives Black Bush its rich, fruity notes and deep, smooth character.

Bushmills 10Yr Single Malt Irish Whiskey – Ireland (750ml) – $48

Triple distilled from 100% malted barley and matured for a minimum of 10 years, mainly in Bourbon-seasoned barrels. Aromas of honey, vanilla and milk chocolate introduce a soft, easy mouthfeel that carries a hint of toasted oak. Finishes crisp and clean.

Bushmills 16Yr Single Malt Irish Whiskey – Ireland (750ml) – $80
A distinctive Irish malt whiskey that's aged for 16 years in a combination of Oloroso Sherry and Bourbon casks, then matured for several months in Port wine barrels – a unique maturation which imparts notes of juicy fruits, nuts and spice – plus a hint of ruby redness. The robust nose of coffee and spice nicely matches flavors of praline, honey fruits and nuts. Deep finish with flavors of berries and dark chocolate.

Saturday, June 18th, 5-8pm

All dads are peacemakers

Western Whiskey. Wyatt Earp may have been a legendary lawman, but wrangling the wild west is nothing compared to a day in the life of a Ft. Greene dad. How about a little whiskey for back on the ranch?

10% off whiskey featured during the tasting

Mccarthy's Single Malt Whiskey, Clear Creek Distillery – Oregon (750ml) – $46
This ambitious whiskey from Clear Creek Distillery in Portland, OR is about as close as you can get to an authentic single malt scotch from a former colony. Made in the Islay tradition from peat-malted barley brought in from Scotland and aged in old sherry casks, this is an assertive, peaty whiskey.

Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey – Denver, Colorado (750ml) – $55
Extremely small batch, artisan whiskey from Colorado. Made from barley – like Scotch, and aged in oak – like Bourbon. Josh occasionally lent these guys a hand at their small distillery in Denver. If you get any of the bottles he helped to fill, they're bound to be a little light…

Thanks, Dad.
