during the summers hottest days.

If you are a single-family or attached two-family homeowner and would like to participate in this exciting, new pilot program–you can.

Where do I sign up?

Wallabout Historic District on NY 1

The NY State Office of Park, Recreation, and Historic Preservation has listed about 5 blocks of Wallabout, between Myrtle and Park, on the New York State Register of Historic Places. The nomination will now be forwarded on to Washington, D.C. to hopefully be approved as a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This recognition allows property owners in the district to qualify for tax credits and other incentives when doing historic renovations to their buildings. These listings are NOT the same as a NYC Landmark District, which comes with regulations about what you can and cannot do to your property. The NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission is considering landmarking the Vanderbilt Avenue block of Wallabout.

Check out the NY 1 video.

"Living Walls" Art Exhibit and Full-Flavored Friday @ Gnarly Vines, today

Stop in at Gnarly Vines to experience the “Living Walls” exhibit, featuring botanical arrangements by Kate Hill Cantrill that incorporate various natural elements, like mosses, twisted sticks and dried elements, many found in Fort Greene Park, while enjoying Gnarly's Full-Flavored Friday, featuring Gewurztraminer, Cabernet, Petite Sirah, Amarone.

(note that the exhibit will be up at Gnarly Vines for a month. Catch it!)

Friday, March 18th, 6-9pm

More from Gnarly Vines: Galileo was condemned as a heretic for ascribing to Copernicus' heliocentric thesis about the universe. We're not sure the Heretic Petite Sirah we're tasting is quite so boldly nonconformist, but it's damn tasty.

15% off all wines featured at the tastings

2008 Valckenburg VA21 Gewurztraminer – Pfalz, Germany
$12.50

Full-bodied and a bit off-dry with pretty rose petal aromas. The tell-tale lychee and orange peel flavors are followed by more subtle spice notes of nutmeg, cinnamon and clove. Perfect match for spicy cuisine or richer seafood like sauteed scallops. If you like Riesling, try a Gewurztraminer.

2009 Leese Fitch Cabernet Sauvignon – California
$11

A deep, dark, full-bodied blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Syrah, 5% Tempranillo, 2% Alicante Bouchet, and 2% Petite Sirah. Most of the fruit comes from vineyards in Monterey and Paso Robles with some Cab and Syrah coming from River Junction, on the way up north towards Mount Shasta. Great with open-faced steak or portobello mushroom sandwiches.

2006 Amarone, Cesari – Veneto, Italy
$50

A blend of the traditional Valpolicella grapes – 75% Corvina, 20% Rondinella and 5% Molinara – that are air-dried until mid January by which time they've lost 30%-40% of their weight. These uber-concentrated grapes result in a rich, full-bodied, leathery wine with strong herbal and raisiny/prune notes that clocks in at 15% alcohol. A perfect pairing for strong, funky, moldy, veiny cheeses as well as game, grilled meats, sausage and peppers.

2007 Four Vines – Heretic – Petite Sirah, Paso Robles, CA
$35

Among our biggest, baddest, boldest, kick-ass wines, the Heretic is a deep, dark, opaque, smoky, gamey, leafy, spicy, firm and dare I say 'balanced'…like a sumo wrestler on a tightrope! This bad boy can stand up to pretty much any strong-flavored, spicy cuisine but goes particularly well with our neighbor Abdul's Senegalese Chicken over at abistro!

Gnarly Vines is located at 350 Myrtle Avenue between Carlton and Adelphi. They can be reached at 718.797.3183.

Wallabout Walking Tour, Historic Districts Council Conference – this weekend

Want to find out more about Wallabout, some of the area just north of Myrtle Avenue? Follow architectural historian Andrew Dolkart on a walk through the historic neighborhood of Wallabout. The walking tour is part of the Historic Districts Council's 17th Annual Preservation Conference. The theme of this year's conference is 'Looking Forward, Looking Back: 40 Years of Preserving NYC Neighborhoods' and it will take place March 4-6 at St. Francis College.

The Wallabout District, amongst other things, has the largest collection of pre-Civil War houses in New York City, as well as former industrial factories, brick apartment buildings and rowhouses. It is also the location of the only one of celebrated poet Walt Whitman's former homes that still stands.

A portion of the Wallabout is currently being considered for historic district status which would help preserve its unique architectural character. Come learn more about this little-known area that remains a time capsule of diverse architecture.

The theme of this year's conference is 'Looking Forward, Looking Back: 40 Years of Preserving NYC Neighborhoods'.

Greene-Ville Garden Grand Opening Celebration on the 10th, Store Now Open 24 Hours

Greene-Ville Garden, the new organic and natural food market located at 373 Myrtle Avenue will hold its grand opening celebration on Thursday, March 10th. Expect food samples, cooking demos and store giveaways throughout the day, including an official store ribbon cutting slated for 4:00pm. Additionally, starting perhaps as early as this weekend, the store will be open 24 hours.

Store owners, Bruce and Kae Lee are no strangers to Fort Greene/Clinton Hill. They have been in the neighborhood since 1986, when Bruce's dad purchased a building at 77 Greene. Their enterprise investment in the neighborhood has grown to include fresh food markets, Greene Farm and Fresh Garden; eateries, One Greene (sushi) and Silver Spoon (frozen yogurt) and pampering palaces, Mirai Nail and Mirai Skin & Body. Greene-Ville represents the couple's seventh neighborhood enterprise.

“I think it's clear that we love the neighborhood,” laughs Kae. “Many prople were afraid to invest in Brooklyn but what we saw from the beginning was quality people that needed products and services locally so they didn't have to leave the neighborhood in order to shop,” she continued.

Greene-Ville is clean, well-lit and well-organized, a floor to ceiling cornucopia of specialty items, organic foods and some conventional items. There is also a variety of grocery items for those with food allergies, such as gluten-free items. The new Myrtle Avenue store features fruits and vegetables and a number of bountiful store sections, such as fresh cut flowers, fruits and vegetables, fresh sandwiches, meats, dairy and cheese, bakery and baking products, baby products and health and beauty aids. A wide variety of beers will be available by week's end, including beer growlers. The Lees have also recently applied to be able to accept public benefits cards in hopes that their quality store items can be accessible to locals across income levels.

The Lees also are in big support of local food purveyors. They carry delicious baked goods by Le Petite Temptation and delectable chocolates by Kopali Organics. Both local companies will be giving away samples and conducting cooking demonstrations during the Greene-Ville grand opening.

When asked about a possible 'health theme' running through all 7 busineses, Kae exclaims, “Yes, health and wellness. People want to live longer and live well.

What else to expect from Greene-Ville?

“We're excited to be here. We've spoken with our suppliers in hopes of working out better volume deals so that we can offer customers our best prices,” shared Kae.

Greene-Ville Garden is located at 373 Myrtle Avenue between Clermont and Adelphi. The full day grand opening celebration will take place on Thursday, March 10th.

Please drop in at Greene-Ville or call the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership for additional grand opening details.

Pushkin Creperie & Bakery To Open at the Absolute

Husband and wife, Cengiz and Elena Korkmaz and Elenas brother, Vadim Kiyaev (a Pratt alum) had been looking for commercial space for more than two years when they found the 1000sf commercial space at the Absolute Condos at 543 Myrtle between Steuben and Emerson.

Their new 25-seat business is called Pushkin Creperie & Bakery and will be the third retail tenant for the Absolute when the creperie/bakery opens in the Spring. Farmer in the Delis second location and Hadas Gallery are the other of the buildings tenants.

In sharp contrast to the spaces exterior, the cafes inner design will very much reflect the Romantic Era, the time of its namesake, renowned Russian writer, Alexander Pushkin. Expect browns and golds, antiques, moldings, the works of Pushkin and other authors of the period on shelves, shared Elena.

The delicious-sounding menu will most certainly give a nod to French cuisine (crepes after all), but Russian-style crepes (including smoked salmon, sour cream, caviar) and Turkish-influenced crepes amongst others, will also be available. Russia is where Elena and Vadim are from. Cengiz is from Turkey. The baked goods will include
