Thumbs Up for Mr. Coco

It's been nearly two weeks since Mr. Coco, the new gourmet grocery store at 414 Myrtle Avenue, has opened. Word on the street? Two thumbs up.

Stop in, say 'hi'…and buy. What's flying off the shelves? The strawberries that are selling for $1.00 per pound.

Mr. Coco is open 24/7. It is located at 414 Myrtle Avenue, near the corner of Vanderbilt and can be reached at 347.987.4578.

New Program Manager position at MARP

You may have noticed that, over the past few years, we've ramped up our involvement in local food access issues. We started organizing the Fort Greene CSA back in 2007, and have added programs like the Ingersoll Gardens and last October's Youthmarket to the growing list of local initiatives.

We're thrilled to announce that we've received funding through New York Community Trust and Atlantic Philanthropies to participate in the national Community Experience Partnership initiative, which aims to engage older adults as leaders in projects that improve local food systems. This funding will allow us to expand our food access programming, to continue to engage local residents in a dialogue about improving our food system … and to grow our staff! In fact, we've just posted an announcement for a new Program Manager for Food Access Initiatives on
idealist.org. Check it out, and spread the word.

Myrtle Windows Gallery – last weekend to view and purchase works from "IMPRINT"

Last chance to view the works in the latest MWG exhibition, “Imprint”, which will say goodbye on Wednesday, March 31st! Take advantage of the opportunity to add to your collection – many of these prints are very affordable, some at just $20!

Also, don't forget to pick up a gallery guide at participating MWG businesses, since this will also be your last chance to take advantage of specials listed in the brochure at Thai 101, Anima, Kapella's, Green in BKLYN, and Karrot.

About Myrtle Windows Gallery:
Myrtle Windows Gallery (MWG) is an open air art gallery that breaks down the walls of the traditional private art gallery to bring two-dimensional art to the public arena via the storefront window, where it is accessible to anyone simply walking down the street. Ten Myrtle Avenue storefronts temporarily transform part of their windows into gallery space for the works of local artists. The initiative helps bring together artists, local businesses, and the community in a dialogue about art in public spaces. For more information, please visit www.myrtleavenue.org.

This Myrtle Windows Gallery exhibit is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council, Inc. (BAC).

Fort Greene Progressives Pot Luck – this weekend at S. Oxford Space

Local progressives are getting together this Saturday, February 27th from 1pm to 5pm for some neighborly networking. Here's the event description from the organizers:
This Pot Luck and social gathering will bring together progressives, activists and organizers from the Clinton Hill and Fort Greene community. It's an opportunity for all of us to meet informally and get to know each other, to talk and share, to eat and have fun.

It's a family event. No speeches. Games for the kids, some informal music and spoken word if you want to share it, video and images about our work and the issues we feel strongly about. And we'll have information from each sponsoring group about the work we are doing.

This is a Pot Luck. Please let us know what food item you can bring. Also, since the space is costing us a good deal of money, which none of our organizations have, we will be taking up a collection for small donations at the event.

This get together has been jointly organized by CHIPS, Fort Greene Peace, Fort Greene/Clinton Hill Food Coalition, FUREE, MARP, the Fort Greene CSA, PACC and several others. We are all neighbors, living and/or working in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill for peace and an end to violence, and for social justice, against gentrification and for quality housing for all, for better access to good and healthy food, decent health care, quality education and learning opportunities, and an end to illiteracy, locally owned and controlled business, and more.

Myrtle History on Forgotten New York

Did you know that Myrtle is an ancient Kings County track, first laid out in 1835 as Cripplebush Road? Or that horse cars traveled Myrtle in the 1850s?

From being the first paved street in Brooklyn, to being the site of the Myrtle El, an elevated rail line that ran from 1888 to 1969, Myrtle has always been an important travel route in Brooklyn. This week, Forgotten New York is exploring the past and present of Myrtle Avenue!

Check out the article to find out which local church still holds remnants of the Myrtle El, the former name of Fort Greene Park, what Myrtle looked like in 1969 from aboard the El, where Walt Whitman drafted Leaves of Grass and more.

The above image (from Forgotten New York), taken in 1969 from the Myrtle El, shows a fruit market at the corner of Myrtle and Hall. These days, that is where youll find Liberty Pizza, and just down the block, MARPs office!

Final Weekend – Designing the Myrtle Avenue Pedestrian Plaza Exhibition

This is the final weekend of the Designing the Myrtle Avenue Pedestrian Plaza Mini-Exhibition and Pop-up Workshop. Please stop by 352 Myrtle this Saturday, between 12 5pm to view the submissions to the Call for Ideas and best practices complied by the Partnership staff, and to participate in the creation of a vibrant neighborhood public space on Myrtle.

Last weekend, during reception and gallery hours, many community members came out to review and discuss plaza designs collected through our Call for Ideas and our public space best practices. Formatted so that you can respond directly to the proposed plaza designs or use a map of the future plaza site to voice your feedback, the workshop allows you to share your recommendations for the programming and activities, amenities, greening, and aesthetics of the space and see what your neighbors are suggesting.

After the workshop, the Partnership will be sitting down to look at common requests and recommendations, compiling a list of feedback themes and frequently mentioned programs, amenities, etc. Together with the Call for Ideas submissions and best practices, the results of the workshop will be used in our first meetings with the NYC DOT selected design team, taking place in the upcoming months.

The Call for Ideas, released in August of 2009, was intended to gather plaza concepts from professional and amateur designers that would serve as a conversation starter and inform the design process. Though the official call was closed in November of 2009, the Partnership is accepting design proposals on an ongoing basis to be shared for community review online and added to our Design Book, if you are interested in contributing, you can find more information here.

In case you missed the reception, you can view pictures of the event (and see workshop attendees in action) online; the eight designs on display can be seen on our Flickr site as well. We encourage everyone to stop by 352 Myrtle this Saturday, between 12-5pm and if you cant make it, please leave your comments on our Flickr, the projects facebook page or email them to sarah@myrtleavenue.org.

New Tree Guards for Myrtle – A Preview

Maybe you noticed a new addition to the tree pit on Myrtle between Waverly and Clinton, just between Karens Body Beautiful and Owas African Market a stylized, unique tree guard! This prototype is the result of a street furniture design process that began in 2007 with the Pratt Design Incubator. Were in the hard prototype stage with this piece, which means what you see here is very close to the final design, but were still making small tweaks here and there.

Were hoping to install up to 25 new tree guards along Myrtle this year, with more to come in future years. Initially, well prioritize younger trees, given that they are especially fragile during their first few years and face perils like errant motor vehicles and heavy bike chains.

This is not your ordinary, average cookie-cutter tree guard! Form and function marry here with an opportunity for artists and aspiring graphic designers to submit ideas for panel designs. Check out the panels in this photo well have the opportunity to laser cut unique patterns into panels, and no two tree guards will be exactly alike! The small sign post on the front of the tree guard will credit the person who submitted the idea, as well as offer information on the tree species in that particular pit. Stay tuned for more information on this, and an open call for ideas later in the spring!

Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

If you have ever walked by Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at 412 Myrtle Avenue near the corner of Clinton Avenue, noticed the crowds and wanted to know more about the school, here's more. We caught up with Professor Jay Lynch, one of the school's owners last week:

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that has been around for about 100 years. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend himself against a bigger, stronger assailant using leverage and proper technique. Mitsuyo Maeda, a martial arts expert from Japan was sent to Brazil to teach the artform. While there, he befriended the prominent Gracie family and was asked to teach two of the younger Gracies the art. When Maeda left the country, the Gracie brothers continued to practice but realized rather quickly that if jiu-jitsu requires a partner and they only had one another to practice the art with, they had better take out the more violent aspects of it. They expanded on the concepts of leverage, chokes, and joint-locks in order to be able to still practice with one another to their fullest ability. The art evolved under the Gracies and became known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art. It is about self-defense. If you are looking for a fitness regimen or an art form that builds discipline and spurs confidence in every area of your life, you might want to look more closely at it.

Why Fort Greene/Clinton Hill as the place for your new biz venture?

I live on Washington Avenue. What better location than ones own neighborhood for this type of venture? When we were looking around locally, we found a place in Cobble Hill that we thought was terrific, but in the final hour, it fell through. We were really discouraged at first but when we subsequently found the space on Myrtle and finally opened our doors, we quickly realized that Myrtle Avenue was the better choice. Its down the block from where I live. We have a huge number of referrals and mostly local students, both residents and business owners from the immediate vicinity. Many who drop in say, I took a little karate as a kid, but of course, this is not the case for everyone.

Not everyone who studies an art form wants to then teach that art form, no less opening a school centered on that art form. When did the teaching and entrepreneurial bugs hit you?

I had an inkling that I wanted to teach when I started studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I also looked around me and noticed that the calmest, most confident instructors were people who wanted to and found ways to do it all the time. These instructors were extremely tough, but also warm and very giving of their craft. Also, I think the operation of a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school offers a bold business paradigm shift so to speak. In many business environments, the thought is if I win, you have to lose. Not in this discipline.

Does the school operate on belt promotion? Tell us more about the school.

Yes, we operate on belt promotion. We are not a competition school in the sense that there are fights or competitions to advance to the next level. Instead, attendance, attitude and commitment are what go into belt promotion. We thought this over long and hard before opening the school and thought it the best model to go with. At the end of the day the real benefits to training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are learning, training and dealing with things directly applicable to lifeconstantly being in and learning to get out of difficult situations. In competition schools, losses far outweigh wins anyway and a win at the end of the day doesnt last for long. However, all of the other things one learns make them a winner for long-term, far sustaining.

Black belt is the highest belt but we consider it in a lot of ways the minimum goal. After all, once you achieve it, your work has just begun.

Private and group lessons are available. Our Myrtle Avenue location is primarily adult-oriented, about 8:2. We do take children and as young as 8-years-old.

Our introductory special is $19.95, which includes a private lesson and a uniform.

We noticed that BBJJ had clothing and food drives going on in November and December for the holidays and that you are organizing around Haiti Earthquake Relief now, is community-involvement or giveback a part of your business philosophy?

Absolutely. It is always the season for giving. Giving is the best way to help yourself and to help others.

Professors Jay Lynch and Gene Dunn are the owners of Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, located at 412 Myrtle Avenue, just off of Clinton Avenue. Please give them or their very capable powerhouse staff of three a call to find out more about Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Read more about Professors Jay, Dunn and other instructors here: http://www.brooklynbjj.com/staff/
