SUMMARY:Yardcore: Brooklyn Bashment in Fort Greene Park\, 5/10
DESCRIPTION:Jamaica might be the original home of dancehall\, but New York City can certainly lay claim to some of the genre’s shining moments. Now The Red Bull Music Academy is bringing a wide range of current\, future and pioneering dancehall artists together for a massive\, free daytime party under the Brooklyn skies. Featuring a special set by dub master and sound system ruler King Jammy\, the event will also include performances from Jamaica’s Assassin\, Lisa Hyper\, and Tifa\, and Brooklyn’s Kranium\, Ricky Blaze\, Mixpak Sound\, and Federation Sound. The event will also feature site-specific installations from artist collaborative AVAF (Assume Vivid Astro Focus)\, internationally renowned for their bodacious style\, critique of social codes\, and their longtime celebration of music’s liberating power. For Yardcore: Brooklyn Bashment\, AVAF’s visual fantasy offers a bold and brilliant take on dancehall aesthetics with an explosive stage design\, as well flags and graphic treatments throughout the park. Along with the onslaught of dancehall jams and brilliant art display\, Yardcore: Brooklyn Bashment will also offer bashment-goers authentic Jamaican cuisine.

SUMMARY:Roof Top Films at Trilok Fusion Center for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Trilok Fusion Center for the Arts will host a series of documentary film shorts in this year’s Rooftop Films summer lineup. The series\,  It Seemed So Real\, is a “program of dazzling documentaries that challenge our understanding of every observation”:\n\nWhat looks like a beautiful pattern may turn out to be something more ominous—a body\, a remnant of disaster. A character who appears to be a charming old man may turn out to be a potent symbol of power; a woman who seems noble and sweet may have committed a heinous crime. Your enemies may be your only saviors. But in each of these fascinating and masterful documentaries\, no interpretation settles for long. Our understanding shifts like snow drifts\, gets shattered like shrapnel\, and meaning remains elusive but persuasive.\n\n\nTHE FILMS\n\nSound of a Million Insects\, Light of a Thousand Stars (Tomonari Nishikawa | New York\, NY | 2 min.)\nI buried a 100-foot 35mm film negative film under fallen leaves alongside a country road\, which was about 15 miles away from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station\, for one night in June 2014. The film was exposed to the possible remaining of the radioactive materials. \nOn The Spot: Gaza – Chronicles of a Conflict (Eszter Cseke and Andras S. Takacs | Hungary | 27 min.)\nA Qassam-fighter is collecting the remaining parts of Ahmed Jabari’s body from his wreck after an Israeli airstrike that killed the head of al-Qassam Brigade\, the armed wing of Hamas. A Palestinian journalist who doesn’t believe in violence\, is getting a phone call\, his 8-year-old daughter was hit. A shiver cut three of her fingers off. Parallel stories of the Qassam-fighter whose dream is to blow himself up to take revenge and the journalist who is willing to do anything to get her daughter into an Israeli hospital – the only place where she can be saved. The birth of hatred and hope – the chronicles of a conflict in Gaza. \nStarting Point (Michał Szcześniak | Poland | 25 min.)\nAneta rebelled at the age of 19. She went to prison for murder. Nine years later\, while serving her sentence\, she takes up a job of a caregiver. Every day she leaves the prison to go to the nursing home to look after Helena who suffers from rheumatism. By talking to the old lady\, Aneta realizes how much she has in life and starts to believe in herself before the hard test which is ahead of her. \nBär (Pascal Floerks | Germany)\nMy grandpa’s past was always very present. It would break through in something he’d say or do\, but he’d never talk about it. Only now\, by revisiting his life and personality as I knew him\, do I feel the weight of his inheritance. \n\n\n\nShort Films Program\n\n$15 online or at the door\n\nClick here to purchase tickets. \n8:00pm\nDoors open and reception sponsored by New Amsterdam Vodka\n8:30pm\nLive Music\n9:00pm\nFilm begins\n\nSeating is first come\, first served.

SUMMARY:Wallabout Historic Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE REGISTER FOR THE TOUR HERE THROUGH EVENTBRITE. \nOn the last Saturday of each month during Summer 2015\, the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership\, in collaboration with the Fort Greene Park Conservancy\, will host a FREE guided walking tour through Fort Greene Park and the historic Wallabout neighborhood north of Myrtle Avenue. \nThe neighborhood\, most of which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district\, has a beautiful mix of pre-Civil War homes and late 19th century industrial buildings. The walk will discuss how the neighborhood has developed since the Dutch first arrived in the early 1600’s and highlight notable residents\, such as Walt Whitman (visit The Walt Whitman Project for more information). \nThe 2 hour guided tour begins in Fort Greene Park\, includes a 1.5 mile walk\, and concludes at 99 Ryerson Street. The event is FREE\, but space is limited and registration is required. \nThe tours are generously supported by the NY Council for the Humanities. \nPLEASE REGISTER FOR THE TOUR HERE THROUGH EVENTBRITE.
