SUMMARY:Art Opening: 'I Ought To'
DESCRIPTION:Attending the opening and ‘unveiling’ of the new public art work I Ought To by Matthew Geller in the Myrtle Avenue Plaza in Clinton Hill. \nOpening\nSaturday\, November 4th\n1:00-3:00 PM \nMyrtle Avenue Sidewalk Plaza\n550 Myrtle Avenue\, Brooklyn\, NY 11205\n(btw Emerson Place & Steuben Street) \nI ought to is a trio of round stools capped by a concave canopy made of corten steel and cast glass. The canopy is a witty conflation of the pedestrian and the sacred: a 19th century illuminated manhole cover enlarged to the size of a rose window\, a standard feature of gothic cathedrals. Small steel medallions and linear braids also adorn the underside of the canopy\, much the same way they are used on manhole covers for both functional and decorative purposes. On rainy days\, water drains from the center of the canopy through a 24-inch oculus\, creating a diminutive passive water feature in the middle of the work. At night\, a spotlight mounted on a nearby lamppost illuminates the glass. \nFor the past 15 years Matthew Geller has worked with a visual vocabulary that doesn’t immediately telegraph its status as art. As a starting point\, he uses blemishes\, sites\, and vernaculars that have been marginalized in some form and then retrofits these abject artifacts to create micro public squares.  His work has been described in various ways\, from “urban earthworks” to “industrial baroque settees.” The idea is to surprise while fostering a sense of community around an unlikely object or site. \nCommissioned by the City of New York Department of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art Program\, the Department of Transportation\, and the Department of Design and Construction.

SUMMARY:Gnarly Vines 10-year Anniversary Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, December 13th | 5-8pm:\n\n\nBubbly\, Dry Riesling\, French and Portuguese Reds\nNV Moissenet-Bonnard Cremant de Bourgogne – Burgundy\, France $27.50 \nMade predominantly of Pinot Noir\, with a small portion of Chardonnay\, this golden sparkler is a perfect option for any celebration. Light-to-medium in body\, with great structure that invites you to drink glass after glass\, these wines are very aromatic with flavors of toasted brioche\, pears\, quince\, and yellow apple. \n2015 Heart & Hands Dry Riesling – Finger Lakes\, NY $21 \nSustainably farmed and harvested by hand\, Heart & Hands clocks in at a barely noticeable 6 grams of residual sugar per liter\, which is pretty dry with just a hint of sweetness\, practically an illusion. Enticing aromas of orange blossom\, honeycrisp apple & minerality on the nose are followed by nectarine and a bright grapefruit flavors on the palate. Brisk\, racy and refreshing finish. Enjoy with pan-seared rainbow trout over wilted greens or rosemary grilled pork tenderloin. \n2016 Domaine Yohan Lardy\, Fleurie Le Vivier – Burgundy\, France $27 \n2014 Gota Wine Bergamota Dão Tinto – Beiras\, Portugal $17.50 \nA blend of 80% Touriga Nacional and small amounts of local varietals including Tinta Roriz\, Jaen\, and Alfrocheiro Preto\, produced by Gota\, a company whose goal is to share Portuguese wine with the world. They buy grapes from small farmers and blend them into accurate\, delicious representations of what we’ve been missing. Touriga Nacional\, traditionally the main ingredient in port\, is known for round acidity\, firm structure and violet aromas. This easy-drinking example does not disappoint. Dark\, ripe berries and trademark floral notes on the nose lead to cherries\, chocolate and a hint of black pepper and rosemary on the palate. Don’t let the flowers fool you; try this with heart meals like venison stew\, roast pork\, or traditional grilled chouriço. \n\nThursday\, December 14th | 5-8pm:\nSparkling white and three reds from Australia\, France\, and California\n2014 Raventos i Blanc Conca del Riu Anoia Brut L’Hereu Sparkling Wine – Catalonia\, Spain $21 \nA very dry Spanish sparkler from a very committed winemaker\, this Barcelona “Conca” is a kind of upgraded Cava\, using the traditional varietals – Macabeo\, Xarel-lo and Parellada. Citrus aromas give way to flavors of apple\, lemon and a little pear\, with a hint of toast lingering in the background. Precisely balanced and very refreshing\, with fine bubbles and lively acidity which begs for oysters\, spiced langostino\, briny olives… but it’s not just for Tapas anymore – try with a spicy Banh Mi sandwich! \n2016 Happs Pinot Noir – Margaret River\, Western Australia $22 \n2011 Paul Jaboulet Aine Crozes-Hermitage ‘Les Jalets’ – Rhone Valley\, France $30 \nRuby-red in color\, this highly expressive\, varietally accurate syrah has notes of dark berries\, smoke\, tobacco\, graphite\, and dried flowers. The deep blackberry and cassis fruit flavors are supported by dusty tannins and a minerally persistant finish. Perfect for Châteaubriand steak and creamy au gratin potatoes. \n2012 Laely Wines Cabernet Sauvignon – Napa Valley\, California $36 \n  \nFriday\, December 15th | 5-8pm:\nBesserat champagne and delicacies from Marius&Co\nNV Besserat de Bellefon Cuvee des Moines Brut – Epernay\, Champagne\, France $44 \nA classic Champagne\, made from a Pinot dominant blend of 43% Pinot Noir\, 42% Pinot Meunier\, 15% Chardonnay. The Besserat has a bright nose of honeysuckle and ripe fruit that comes through this pretty straw-colored wine. Beautiful tiny bubbles rise slowly and steadily and create a creamy\, round texture in the wine. After opening up a little\, the wine exudes hazelnut and toasty notes. Pairs with everything including nothing at all! \nNV Besserat de Bellefon Cuvee des Moines Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut – Epernay\, Champagne\, France $66 \nNV Besserat de Bellefon Cuvee des Moines Brut Rose – Epernay\, Champagne\, France $60 \n\nSaturday\, December 16th | 5-8pm:\nBillecart Salmon champagne\, Tuscan and Napa Valley reds\, and a special cocktail!\n2007 Billecart Salmon Vintage Extra Brut – Champagne\, France $100 \n2012 San Polino Brunello di Montalcino – Tuscany\, Italy $75 \n2014 Atticus John Cabernet Sauvignon – Napa Valley\, California $34 \nAn awesome\, classic Napa Cab with primary aromas of dark berries\, herbs\, and mint giving way to a rich\, ripe palate with toasty notes of mocha and cassis and a gloriously long finish. An incredible steal for a Napa Cab of this quality. Pair with a juicy rib-eye or rack of lamb! \n\nSunday\, December 17th | 5-8pm:\nVan Brunt Stillhouse Whiskey\nAmerican Whiskey $40 \nVan Brunt Stillhouse American Whiskey doesn’t fit neatly into typical whiskey categories though it bears some resemblance to traditional\, pre-prohibition\, NY State whiskies that featured a four grain mash bill made primarily from 40% malted barley and 40% wheat\, with a 10% corn and 10% rye and then aged for about 6 months mostly in tiny 10 gallon charred American Oak casks. This unique whiskey has complex grain flavors with floral notes and a touch of the new barrel sweetness of a bourbon but with flavors that are more reminiscent of a hefeweizen. \nBourbon $40 \nStillhouse Bourbon is a small\, carefully crafted\, single batch made in Red Hook from about 65% organic New York corn and 35% local wheat then aged for about 6 months in small\, new charred American oak casks. It’s bold and full bodied with pronounced woodsy aromas and hints of caramel and coconut. Move over Kentucky – Brooklyn is in Da House! \nRye Whiskey $40 \nAn extremely limited release from Van Brunt Stillhouse\, this inaugural batch of their Rye Whiskey shows nice spiciness and dried apricots with a toasty finish. Get it while it lasts! \nEmpire Rye Whiskey $54 \nTo be an “Empire Rye”\, the whiskey must meet four criteria. At least 75% of its grain must be New York-grown rye. It must be distilled to no more than 160 proof; put into a barrel at no more than 115 proof (which is below the industry standard of 125 proof); and aged at least two years in charred\, new oak barrels. This highly allocated batch of 110 proof Whiskey is a new edition from the Van Brunt Distillery. It has a sweet\, malty aroma. The taste has notes of chocolate and caramel with a slight spicy and decadent finish. This is the bottle that will bring rye and bourbon lovers together.

SUMMARY:Scaling Up for Small Businesses in Brooklyn
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn is experiencing an incredible boom in small business activity. the borough is home to roughly 50\,000 businesses with 20 or fewer workers\, and the number of these very small businesses increased by more than 40 percent since 2000. \nBut despite the surge in small business and start-up activity\, relatively few of the small businesses in Brooklyn — and throughout the five boroughs — manage to scale up and achieve sustained growth. Changing this and helping more of the borough’s small businesses scale up\, is an important opportunity to expand the number of middle-income jobs across the city and build wealth among neighborhood-based entrepreneurs. \nFeaturing a panel of Brooklyn-based entrepreneurs and small business experts\, this form will explore the opportunity to turn more of Brooklyn’s great small businesses into medium-sized and large businesses. The first in a series of five forums across the city — with one in each borough — this solutions-focused discussion aims to better understand the challenges that inhibit the growth of local small businesses and the strategies that could be employed to help more of the small firms in Brooklyn to grow to the next level. \nThis event is generously supported by Santander Bank. \nConfirmed speakers include: \n\nNoah Bernamoff\, Founder\, Mile End & Black Seed\nNancy Carin\, Executive Director\, Business Outreach Center Network\nEladia Causil-Rodriguez\, Founder and Owner\, Eladia’s Kids\nEdward G. Rogoff\, Dean\, LIU Brooklyn School of Business\, Public Administration and Information Sciences\nAlmata Zabsonre\, Owner\, Alma’s Hair Braiding\n\nWith introductory remarks from Council Member Robert E. Cornegy\, Jr. \nAttendance is free\, but space is very limited. RSVP is required via email: rsvp@nycfuture.org.

SUMMARY:Benefit Kitchen Training Session
DESCRIPTION:In 2016\, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams partnered with Benefit Kitchen\, an application-based screening tool that is used to determine service benefits for residents living in New York\, New Jersey\, and California\, with plans in the works to expand to Texas. \nBenefit Kitchen is a free financial literacy digital platform that connects working families with a path out of poverty. In 10 minutes\, one can learn about their eligibility and estimated dollar amounts for up to 18 federal\, state\, and local benefits. \nTo promote these free services to eligible Brooklynites\, I would like to invite your organization to our Benefit Kitchen training session taking place on Thursday\, February 1\, 2018 at 6:00 PM inside Brooklyn Borough Hall\, located at 209 Joralemon Street\, Brooklyn\, NY 11201. \nKey information will be provided during this Benefit Kitchen demonstration\, which will be helpful to the community you serve. Though the Benefit Kitchen app is simple enough for almost anyone to use\, we ask that you send a tech-savvy member of your organization so that they can train your other members who can then\, in turn\, check for the eligible benefits for those you serve\, to make Brooklyn a place where no one is missing out on benefits they are entitled to. \nYou can visit: https://app.benefitkitchen.com/signup \nto test the application out for yourself. \nTo RSVP for the training\, please click on this link:  https://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/eventReg?oeidk=a07eeydl2dc6783a9e3&oseq=&c=&ch=

SUMMARY:Behind the Book Volunteering at PS 46
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer with Behind the Book\, a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs\, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms\, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author’s book. \nNo experience or training is necessary to volunteer as a writing\, research or art coach in the classroom. You’ll support\, engage\, and encourage students as they work on their projects. \nThis workshop needs your support as a research coach at PS 46. To sign up\, contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with the program code. We’ll supply the address and other information when you’re confirmed: \nDate: Tuesday\, March 27th\nTime: 9:00 – 10:30 AM \nAbout the workshop: Pluto Visits Earth!\, Steve Metzger‘s playful story about the recently demoted dwarf planet traveling through the solar system to reclaim its status\, inspired first-graders to research a planet of their choice. They’ll use what they’ve learned to create a poster highlighting the most interesting facts. Research coaches will work with two students to help them gather the information. \nVisit our volunteer opportunities page to find program descriptions and available volunteer dates throughout the school year. \nTo join our team and receive announcements of new volunteer opportunities as they’re posted\, please complete our brief questionnaire.
