Launched in 2006, the Young Entrepreneur Mentorship Program (YEMP) is a 7-week summer program where local youth are mentored by Myrtle Avenue business owners.  Business owners get an extra set of hands helping in their businesses and the teens gain valuable paid summer work experiences while also participating in workshops about financial literacy, resume writing and job readiness.

Approximately 15-20 students are selected to participate each summer, with the majority living or attending school near Myrtle Avenue, or both.  Applications are available in early June. For more information, please contact Jennifer Stokes.

YEMP Highlights

  • Nearly 200 local teens have successfully completed the YEMP program
  • 70 small businesses on Myrtle Avenue have participated in the YEMP program
  • YEMP has overwhelmingly served as a first-time work experience for participating program youth

Funding for YEMP program is provided by  Brooklyn Community Foundation, Con EdisonDeutsche Bank Foundation and the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Business Improvement District (BID). Initial support was provided by the JP Morgan Chase Foundation.
