In Memoriam: Beuford Smith (1936–2025) A beloved In Memoriam: Beuford Smith (1936–2025)

A beloved Clinton Hill resident, Beuford Smith was more than a neighbor—he was a pillar of the community. Known for his warmth, wisdom, and deep commitment to connecting with people, Mr. Smith had a way of making everyone feel seen.

Whether through mentorship, being ever present in the lives of his friends and family or chatting with the neighborhood’s many dog owners whose dogs just had to stop by his stoop for a treat—he connected with everyone with a genuine generosity of character.

His impact extended far beyond Brooklyn. As a self-taught photographer, he came into his own in the early 1960s as a prominent member of the Harlem-based Kamoinge Workshop—a groundbreaking collective of Black photographers—helping shape a powerful visual narrative of Black life and culture in New York City.

In 1973, he co-founded the Black Photographers Annual, an influential publication that uplifted Black voices through photography, essays, and poetry. The Annual featured work from legends like Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, and Gordon Parks, and remains a vital part of the cultural archive.

Mr. Smith’s photographs are in the collections of major galleries and museums, including MoMA and the Whitney, and over his lifetime, he received many honors including 2017’s Culture of Legacy Award from The Griffin Museum of Photography.

A dedicated family man, Mr. Smith is survived by his son, two grandsons, and a great granddaughter. His wife Evelyn remembers his unwavering presence in their lives, and his lifelong devotion to friends and community.

We honor his life, lens, and legacy—with deep gratitude and love.
