Underground fire on the Avenue

morning fire

Fire trucks lined Myrtle Avenue between Waverly Avenue and Hall Street starting at about 10:30 this morning. The possible cause was fire in an underground Con Ed vault.

Much of the fire truck activity appeared to be concentrated on the north side of the Avenue between Washington and Waverly, though the FDNY opened all commercial cellar doors on both sides of the street in this area.

An explosion was heard sometime between 11:30am and noon. Several businesses on these blocks were evacuated and many residents and other pedestrians were advised to go/stay indoors.

Thankfully, there were no injuries of which we are aware.

Fire trucks began to leave the area and some normal activities started to resume at around 1:30pm, though many businesses still haven’t been able to return to open or re-open their businesses.

A few Con Ed emergency trucks are still on the scene as well as the FDNY investigation unit. There are reports that some Time Warner Cable service is out in the area. The 88th precinct is also on the scene helping to secure the area.
