Freedom Band depicts a band of riders, comprised of some of the foremost leaders and icons of the Civil Rights movement, riding into an explosion of light. The composition borrows from American historical paintings that depict heroes leading a band of militants or patrons into battle, on a quest for adventure or towards victory. This culture of painting though, was almost always reserved for white icons with from time to time colored contributors/participants included in the bottom most corner or in the background. In the rarest cases, when there was a band of all black militants, a white general led them.
