Young Entrepreneur Mentorship Program

Launched in 2006, the Young Entrepreneur Mentorship Program (YEMP) is a 6-week summer program where local youth are mentored by Myrtle Avenue business owners.  Business owners get an extra set of hands helping in their businesses and the teens gain valuable paid summer work experiences while also participating in workshops about financial literacy, resume writing and job readiness.

Approximately 15-20 students are selected to participate each summer, with the majority living or attending school near Myrtle Avenue, or both.  Applications are available in early June. For more information, please contact us.

YEMP Highlights

  • Since 2006, 200 local teens have successfully completed the program
  • 70 small businesses and merchants on Myrtle Avenue have served as employers and mentors in the program
  • YEMP has overwhelmingly served as a first-time work experience for participating youth

Funding for YEMP program in 2019 is provided by The Gilbert Rivera Charitable Foundation, Con Edison, and the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Business Improvement District (BID). Initial support for the program was provided by the JP Morgan Chase Foundation.
