Post Explosion: Maggie Brown + Five Spot

Maggie Brown & Five Spot2

Sending out the best of vibes to Five Spot Soul Food & Supper Club at 459 Myrtle Avenue andMaggie Brown Restaurant at 455 Myrtle Avenue, both located between Washington and Waverly Avenues, as they continue to fully recover from the man hole cover explosion of earlier this week. Gas is still temporarily interrupted, so no food available.

Maggie Brown is open for bottled and canned drinks and cocktails only. Stay tuned to their Facebook page for any updates.

Five Spot is hoping to reopen as soon as possible. Stay tuned to their Facebook page for any updates as well.

Gas interruptions and other challenges have not allowed either to reopen with food as of yet. They are both hoping to be fully reopened as soon as possible, possibly by early next week.

Stop through to show support.

The merchants on Myrtle Avenue are ALWAYS up to great things, in their stores and outside of their stores.

In addition to their hard work and entrepreneurial efforts and their time as vital members of their families and the community at large, many are actively engaged in even other efforts. To name just a few of those activities: mentoring, fire fighting, teaching, social activism, fashion merchandising, ballet dance, youth work, public speaking, accounting, saxophone playing, visual art and chorale singing.

We recently came across pictures of two business owners in action “in their spare time,” and we thought we’d share.

Turns out that Christopher Sanchez, chef and owner at Le Petit Bakery at 354 Myrtle and Dr. Dennis Cheng, eye doctor and owner of the eponymous DC Optics located at 390 Myrtle Avenue are Spartan racers! Yep, in these popular obstacle races, they regularly jump over fire, run through mud and God knows what else. Just the adrenaline rush they need for Christopher to continue to come up with amazing pastry recipes and for Dennis to continue to care for our eyes. Thanks guys! 🙂

Le Petit Bakery is located at 354 Myrtle Avenue between Carlton and Adelphi (718.875.6500). It is a mother/son collaboration borne out of a desire to bring the comforting flavors and warmth of family gatherings from their table to ours. Le Petit focuses on making exceptional, fine quality, French pastries with an American twist.

DC Optics is located at 390 Myrtle Avenue between Clermont and Vanderbilt (347.504.1121). It’s mission is to provide patients the most comprehensive eye examinations, stylish eyewear and latest innovations in contact lenses in a relaxed and friendly environment. DC Optics also looks to provide community outreach in the form of school screenings and exams for children in need. Proceeds from every purchase go to help children in our area who need glasses but cannot afford them.

Peck’s Homemade Delicacies: August Opening!

Peck's

Peck’s, the eponymously named fresh, prepared food business is set for a soft opening on Myrtle Avenue in August and a grand opening in September. Peck’s will be located at 455 Myrtle between Washington and Waverly.

Peck’s will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and include a variety of fresh, delicious food selections, including prepared foods, charcuterie, artisanal cheese, salads, rotisserie chicken, sandwiches, baked goods, vegetables, preserves, wines and growlers of craft beer. Prepared food selections will vary daily. Some prepared dishes on the menu lineup are: roasted carrots with salsa verde and buttermilk dressing, white beans with chorizo emulsion, mashed potatoes with chicken fat fried onions, kasha varnishkes, braised fennel with sharp provolone, and salmon rillettes. Also forthcoming: a backyard space where neighbors can enjoy family-style dining.

Owner, Theo Peck, is no stranger to good food, having started out at the age of three at his great grandfather’s famous Lower East Side establishment, Ratner’s Restaurant. He later opened Lansky Lounge, a successful Lower East Side restaurant and bar. Theo is also is the creator of The Food Experiments, a leading national tour of amateur food competitions.

“Living in the area with my wife and son, I wanted a place for locals to go to grab a quick bite to eat without having to worry about high prices and lack of quality,” stated Theo. “Whether people are picking up food for their families, entertaining guests, going on a picnic or need something convenient after working late, we hope the shop will become a neighborhood staple,” he added.

Peck’s will receive a New York Main Street grant from the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership, which will support the installation of a new storefront and other improvements to the retail space.

Connect with Peck’s on Facebook and Twitter for further information, including information about opening day! Peck’s website is forthcoming.

Trilok Students Show Off Their Tree Guard Design!

Trilok Student Panel Presentation_tree guard

Four and five year olds from the ‘Grapes and Berries’ class at the Trilok Center for Arts and Education were presented with a laser-cut steel proof of their design earlier today. Proofs are made before a design can be manufactured into a tree guard. After that, they can be displayed and enjoyed as artwork.

The wee ones’ original tree panel design was selected in the second round of tree guard installations on Myrtle Avenue. Awwwww, start ’em young, folks!

The student’s designs were made into a tree bench and installed on Myrtle Avenue and Waverly.

Check us out on Instagram–follow us (!) for other great pics like this one: http://instagram.com/p/ZiX4RrmqRH/#

Congratulations Trilok ‘Grapes and Berries’ class!

Myrtle’s tree guards are both functional and durable, and offer a ‘canvas’ that reflects local creativity. They were created with a modular design so that each set of panels can have a unique, laser-cut design, meeting the Partnership’s goal of creating more opportunities to incorporate local public art into the streetscape. The newest tree guard panels were designed by 24 local artists, who were selected through an open call for public art. Phase II was funded by the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn BID, NYS DEC Urban and Community Forestry, and NYS Main Street.

Trilok Center for Arts & Education is located at 143 Waverly Avenue, just north of Myrtle Avenue. They can be reached at 718.797.1700 or trilokfusion.com.
