In the Oscar-nominated film 12 Years a Slave, actor, Chiwetel Ejiofor portrays Solomon Northup, a free man sold into slavery in 1841, from his home in Upstate New York to a cotton plantation in Louisiana.. This true story, directed by Steve McQueen, is based on Solomon’s autobiography, which he published shortly after regaining his freedom.
