Move About Myrtle 9/6 highlight: Healthy and Delicious!

Thu, Aug 27th, 2009

All that moving about Myrtle is bound to make you hungry. Fortunately, weve devoted an entire block to that essential and delicious life-force: FOOD. At the first Move About Myrtle event, September 6th, take a walk around the food block, between Hall and Ryerson, where youll be surrounded by all kinds of fresh food and food-related activities.

Weve got 2 excellent and engaging cooking demonstrations to keep you fed and informed. From 12pm-2pm, the Teen Iron Chefs (pictured here) from Family Cook Productions
will be turning out interactive lessons on healthy cooking and living. Aspiring young chefs are especially welcome!

Then from 2pm-4pm, well have the newest addition to our crew of neighborhood chefs, Basil Jones of the forthcoming Sans Souci Restaurant & Bar (330 Myrtle Avenue), demonstrating simple, healthy meals inspired by his Caribbean roots. Mouth watering yet?

Meanwhile, weve got 3 other activities occurring all day long. On the northern side of the block, the Fort Greene CSA is “eating in” with a picnic potluck to raise awareness and action around getting more real food in our young peoples schools. Blankets will be abundant, along with friendly people and homemade food to share. On the other side of the same block, local food activist and entrepreneur, Tree Williams of LiveSip will be hosting a garden activity, engaging passersby in seed planting and saving activities, composting, and other home gardening strategies to ensure participants walk away ready to grow all kinds of delicious food and native plants in and around their homes. Free starter supplies will be available!

Lastly, keep an eye out for our own Sam Lipschultz, who will be armed with interactive food access surveys. The surveys are a part of a community-wide food access assessment, which the Partnership is spearheading this fall with students at Banneker High School. We're looking to identify the core issues and resources in our community in relation to food access, to inform the design of future food access initiatives in the neighborhood. Bring your ideas!

Of course, all of your favorite Myrtle restaurants are cooking up specials for Move About Myrtle, too. Don't miss Jive Turkey's sidewalk barbecue, Anima's “Make your own pesto” demos, and Yamashiro's outdoor sushi bar (just to name a few).

Special thanks to Associated for co-sponsoring activities on the Move About Myrtle food block.
