Clean out those closets and raise money for a local cause

Clean out those closets! Fort Greene SNAP and Brooklyn Young Filmakers are inviting Fort Greene neighbors to hold their own stoop sales on Saturday, June 27th as part of the FGInfoX Stoop Sale Day. They're also encouraging participating households to pledge a portion of their proceeds to one of the small neighborhood non-profits participating in the FGInfoX Stoop Sale Day, but it's not required.

Sign up to participate by Monday, June 22nd and have your location on the Stoop Sale map! Contact Henrietta or Terry at Fort Greene SNAP 718-694-6957, or visit www.fortgreenesnap.org to download an application.

Not interested in holding a stoop sale? Do a green thing and get your name in the film credits by donating saleable items that you are not using to Brooklyn Young Filmmakers for resale at their stoop sale to help them fund their July film project. BYF will use the proceeds from their stoop sale to help fund a Community Filmmaking shoot here in Fort Greene in July. Contact FGInfoX@wearebyfc.org or 718-935-0490 to find out how.

New Biz: Green Pets Opens Monday!

Green Pets Spa & Boutique (572 Myrtle) is the first time business endeavor for local Clinton Hill resident, Twain Belgrave. Green Pets is an eco-friendly daycare, spa and pet grooming space located between Emerson Place and Classon Avenue. Twain has been involved in pet grooming for more than 10 years and looked to himself for solutions when he realized two things: 1) that for most of his career he had been observing and learning from people who were themselves first time entrepreneurs, and 2) that there was a lack of pet-related businesses filling the needs of the more environmentally and health conscious pet owner.

Green Pet offers daycare, boarding, grooming and a large outdoor play area. Green Pets is eco-friendly in its operations as well as products and services. There are toys made from recycled materials and natural shampoos. The business uses energy efficient light bulbs and biz cards made from recycled paper. Right now they are about 60% green. Their goal is to become 100% green. Green Pets is located at 572 Myrtle Avenue, between Emerson and Classon Avenues and can be reached at 718.230.8300.

Israeli Wines by Jonathan Tishbi – Kosher for Passover

and

Saturday, April 11 from 4-7pm
New Wines for Easter

Whites from Piedmont and Reds from the Loire Valley

PASSOVER

All of Jonathan Tishbi's wines are certified Kosher for Passover (and vegan). The holiday begins at sundown on Wednesday, April 8.

In 1882 the Tishbi family was commissioned by Baron Edmond de Rothschild of Bordeaux to plant the first modern wine grape vineyards in Israel. Jonathan Tishbi founded the Tishbi Estate in 1984.

Set near Zichron Yaacov, at the Carmel mountains near the coast, the Tishbi Estate vineyards enjoy the cooling breezes of the Mediterranean Sea. Tishbi also grows grapes at higher elevations to the North, in the cool mountain air and long Mediterranean growing season, and in the Negev Desert to the South, where hot, arid days and cool, windy nights combine with sandy soils to yield superior grapes.

Sunday, April 5, 4-7pm
Tishbi Israeli Wine Tasting
Ditch the Manischewitz, invite Jonathan Tishbi (and Elijah of course) to your seder instead.

2008 Tishbi Chenin Blanc (Mevushal) – Israel – $12.50
Just a bit off-dry, with fresh, ripe melon aromas and flavors, round, soft texture and hints of apricot and peach stones. Very tasty on it's own or with matzoh!

2007 Tishbi Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc (Mevushal) – Israel – $12.50
Floral aromas, plenty of crisp acidity, straightforward and simple, light white wine with a touch of nut on the finish.
2007 Tishbi Vineyards Emerald Riesling (Kosher) – Israel – $12.50
Semi-dry Emerald Riesling, a grape that is a cross between fragrant Muscat d'Alexandria and traditional German Riesling. Bright, crisp fruit flavors and an off-dry finish.

2006 Jonathan Tishbi Special Reserve Chardonnay (Kosher) – Jerusalem Hills, Israel – $27
Partially barrel fermented in French oak, creamy vanilla and round, ripe apricot and tropical fruit. Soft texture with crisp acid and a fresh finish.

2007 Tishbi Cabernet Sauvignon-Petite Syrah (Kosher) – Israel – $12.50
Unoaked, light to medium bodied dry red. Fresh fruity flavors with soft tannins and a little pepper on the finish.

2006 Tishbi Estate Pinot Noir (Kosher) – Israel – $27
Soft oak aroma, fresh strawberry fruit with light earthy, dusty tannins and a touch of mineral and pepper.

2005 Tishbi Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Kosher) – Israel – $27
Estate selection Cabernet, aged one year in oak. Ripe, aromatic blackberry and raspberry, balanced with medium dry tannins and toasty vanilla oak flavors.

10% off all Tishbi wines during the tasting

EASTER

Saturday, April 11, 4-7pm
Whites from Piedmont and Reds from the Loire Valley
Enjoy these versatile wines that pair beautifully with springtime, Easter meals –
traditionally-made, hand-harvested from old, gnarly low-yielding vines, fermented with indigenous wild yeasts, minimal sulphur, unfiltered and made by responsible stewards of the earth – a great way to end Lent.

Easter is Sunday, April 12; Orthodox Easter is Sunday, April 19

2007 Cascina degli Ulivi 'Montemarino' Bianco – Piedmont, Italy – $25

Golden straw color, pretty floral aromas, lavender, vanilla, caramel and butterscotch. Soft and rich, brazil nut flavors, touch briney and complex, floral, fascinating. Old-vine Cortese (some from over 100 year old vines and the rest around 40-50 years old) from a high hill in Gavi, aged 1 year in oak.

2007 Vittoria Bera and Figli 'Arcese' Bianco – Piedmont, Italy – $14

Light and fresh white blend of Arneis, Cortese and Favorita (Vermentino). It's slightly perfumed but subtlely and has a frizzantino style…meaning it has a light amount of spritz.

2007 Domaine de la Pepiere 'Cuvee Granit' Vin de Pays – Loire Valley, France – $15

Loire Valley red table blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cot (Malbec) and Gamay. Delicious earthy flavors with light currant and berry fruit. Soft stony minerality, dusty tannins, fresh and elegant. Winemaker Marc Ollivier is pictured at left – talk about responsible stewards of the earth, this guy just reeks of environmentalism, doesn't he?

2007 Le Clos du Tue-Boeuf 'La Guerrerie' – Touraine, Loire Valley, France – $22.50

Organic and biodynamic blend of 60% Cot (Malbec) and 40% Gamay from winemaker Thierry Puzelat in the village of Touraine. Light, juicy red with very soft tannins and delicate rose and berry flavors. A hint of earth and herbs gives depth.

10% off all wines poured during the tasting

Metro PCS: new biz at 518 Myrtle

Metro PCS, a new cellular phone business is moving to 518 Myrtle Avenue–next door to Blockbuster. Had a chance to speak briefly to someone waiting inside the store for a delivery yesterday. He said that they are expecting to have their doors open possibly this weekend.

According to a Crain's NY article published two weeks ago, Dallas-based Metro PCS Communications Inc. was “the surprise winner in a 2006 auction of $3.6 billion worth of licenses covering the New York area.” The companys network covers 10 million customers in the New York metropolitan area, including the five boroughs and portions of Bergen, Hudson, Union and Essex counties in New Jersey.

Also according to the Crain's article, the company is “appealing to customers to forfeit their landlines for a prepaid wireless plan” and offering prepaid plans, low rates and minimal commitment.”

Metro PCS, which also serves Philadelphia and Boston in the Northeast, hopes New York will become its biggest market within a year. The carrier currently has 5.4 million subscribers nationwide.

G Train Eulogized

The MTA proposes service cuts for the G train (no more G to Queens on evenings and weekends). Yesterday morning the line became one of many to be eulogized at a mock funeral service.

The Save the G Coalition, along with State Assembly Members Joseph Lentol and Hakeem Jeffries were amongst yesterday's mourners in Queens.

Assemblyman Joseph Lentol had this to say: “The G Train has been on life support for years and all of our efforts to revive it and bring it new life have gone completely ignored despite the tens of thousands of people who rely on it every day and the many more who would if the G were actually a reliable train. So now we stand here at its funeral as we ask everyone to stand with us and take action one last time to save the G.”

Calling local artists: Exhibit your work in the Myrtle Windows Gallery!

Myrtle Windows Gallery (MWG) is an open air art gallery that breaks down the walls of the traditional private art gallery to bring two-dimensional art to the public arena via the storefront window, where it is accessible to anyone simply walking down the street. Ten Myrtle Avenue storefronts temporarily transform part of their windows into gallery space for the works of local artists. The initiative helps bring together artists, local businesses, and the community in a dialogue about art in public spaces.

Installation System
The installation system serves to create a uniform look that unifies the exhibit, and displays work in a way that does not damage the merchants space or the work itself. The system includes a solar shade to provide a clean backdrop for the artwork while maintaining light and view through to the interior of the shop. A cable hanging system allows the artwork to hang in the window in front of the shade. The Partnership will not provide insurance to cover the art during this exhibition; however, the artist has the option to secure his/her own policy to cover theft or damage to the works while installed in the storefronts.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria
MWG seeks ten (10) existing two-dimensional works of art (paintings, prints, photographs, collage, mixed media etc.) that can be easily installed in each of ten storefronts windows. Preference will be given to local artists whose work captures or is inspired by urban life. If the artist chooses to offer pieces for sale the Partnership will receive a commission on each sale, to be negotiated with the artist prior to the exhibit. Given that community accessibility is a key component of the mission of this initiative, we hope to exhibit works at a broad range of prices.

Application Process
The following materials must be received by Friday, February 13, 2009 at 5pm at:
Myrtle Windows Gallery, 472 Myrtle Avenue, 2nd Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11205
” Complete contact information including name, address, telephone and email address
” CD of images of the works to be included in the exhibition, with index listing title, medium and dimensions for each
” Narrative description of the collection of works to be included in the exhibition
” Current Resume and artist statement

Artists will be notified by February 18, 2009, and installation will take place beginning February 23, 2009.

Myrtle Masstransiscope Restored

Masstransiscope, a quite colorful piece of public art installed more than 28 years ago in the abandoned Myrtle Avenue subway station, has been restored.

Artist, Bill Brand installed the work in September 1980. One of the things which makes the work unique is it is constructed from 228 hand-painted panels, viewed through a series of vertical slits set into a specially constructed housing. The piece works on the principle of the Zoetrope, a 19th century optical toy.

Over the years, the installation fell into disrepair and the panels became covered with graffiti. Last year, Brand and some volunteers went through a meticulous process of cleaning and restoring the panels.

To see the Masstransiscope, catch the Manhattan-bound B or Q train. You will see it outside the right side of the car just after leaving DeKalb Avenue, but before you reach the Manhattan Bridge.

Walgreen's, It's Official

It's official. Walgreen's held its grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony this past Tuesday at 9am at its new digs at 379 Myrtle Avenue. Many were in attendance, including Chanteria Luvera, store manager; Hien Nguyen, Walgreens District Manager; Council Member Letitia James; John Dew, CB 2; MARP staff; community members; and Patricia Crank, a neighborhood resident who had been advocating for and eagerly awaiting the store's presence for some time.

The reusable green shopping bags seen in the picture are part of Walgreen's new initiative to keep things as green as possible.
