Public Exchange: Film, Evolution of A Criminal

Wed, Feb 11th, 2015 @ 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art (MoCADA) presents a month-long film series featuring the most exceptional films in contemporary Black cinema. The kickoff will be a  screening of Evolution of A Criminal, with a Q&A with filmmaker Darius Monroe after the film.

In Evolution of a Criminal, filmmaker Darius Clark Monroe explores what led him to pull a heist as a teenager in Texas, and returns to the scene of the crime. Through interviews with family members, close friends, and mentors, we learn about the moment Monroe, then a joyous child, realizes the severity of his family’s financial struggles, transforming his outlook on his own life and responsibilities.  Coming back to his neighborhood many years later, Monroe creates an incredibly intimate and personal journey of reflection and forgiveness, while beautifully examining struggles, the desperation of a teen under pressure, and the emotional impact that rippled in the aftermath of that day.

Q&A with filmmaker Darius Clark Monroe following the screening. More screenings to be announced throughout February.
