Myrtle Avenue Plaza Survey

Plaza Photo

The Myrtle Avenue Plaza is shaping up along the south side of Myrtle between Hall Street and Emerson Place and we need your input on public programming ideas. With a new grocery store in tow, and the Pratt Film School adjacent to the 25,000 square foot site, we are full of ideas on how to program this space and we are sure that you have some ideas as well. Click here if you’d like to receive updates on plaza construction and provide feedback on the types of events you’d like to see in the plaza.

Construction is being managed by the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC).  For construction-related questions, please contact the DDC Community Construction Liaison (CCL) Chris Fields.  He can be reached at myrtleplazaccl@gmail.com or (718) 857-3283.

The Healthy Communities Initiative 2015 Grantee Winners for Fort Greene/Clinton Hill have been announced!  Special thanks to our resident-led grant committee Sarah Cornish, Ron Covington, Amber Daniels & Peter Engel, who conducted site visits and intensive outreach in the community to spread the word about this opportunity to groups eligible for funding.

To be eligible for funding, proposals from Fort Greene/Clinton Hill neighborhood groups had to include ideas that focused on Healthy Eating, Open Space, Active Living and/or Fitness. This year six projects were funded. Take a look at this year’s Grantees below:

  1. Child Development Support Corporation (CDSC):  TheHealthy Childcare Healthy Children Project” aims to help Child Care providers in Ingersoll & Whitman Houses to embrace healthy eating and active living in their child care programs. Their project will benefit ten (10) Family Child Care providers who will help expose 60-80 children to a healthy food culture in their program and a portable community chef demonstration kit.
  2. The Neighborhood Work Play Kids Theater: The “Nutrition & Fitness Project” was inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama’s Youth program,  “America’s youth are active and fit”. This project operates at the Clinton Hill Brooklyn Public Library, where youth will be educated about how to eat healthier and participate in fitness education.
  3. Fort Greene SNAP: “Be Heart Healthy” will conduct community fitness walks and healthy cooking demonstration events for parents & grandparents living in Fort Greene Clinton Hill.
  4. Keep Your Pearls Girls: Their project goal is to educate girls about healthy eating and living. The young girls involved in this program live in Farragut and utilize the garden beds in the Vinegar Hill Community Garden on the same block as P.S 307.
  5. Youth Beyond Basketball: The “Main Event Program” mentors boys from the age of 11- 25 years old living in Farragut Houses. Project goal is to continue to compete in basketball tournaments, contributing to healthy eating and fitness education for the youth in the community.
  6. Willoughby Neighborhood Senior Center: The goal of the “Senior Herbal Spice Garden & Kitchen” project is to engage several local seniors in low stress physical activity.  This activity will bring together seniors and the younger community in Fort Greene and will contribute to educating each other by sharing garden skills and ideas. The hope is that the herbs & spices can be used in their meal plan, and that participants will enjoy growing and eating fresh herbs as a community activity.

TBT: 1939 at St. Edwards Street and Auburn Place

St. Edwards_demo of homes between library and ps 67_1939_NYPL

This 1939 photo , taken at the corner of St. Edwards Street and Auburn Place, captures so much Fort Greene history.  Seen on the left is a three-story building that houses an Italian bakery on the ground floor.  This building, along with hundreds of others, were demolished around 1940 to clear way for the new Fort Greene Houses.  The housing development, built by the City, was the largest of its kind at the time it was planned, spanning close to 40 acres and housing 13,000 residents.

A few buildings were spared from the wrecking ball however, including the two seen in these photograph: P.S. 67 and the Walt Whitman Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library.

This photo captures P.S. 67 just prior to the addition of its south wing, which still stands today.  The school today is named after Charles A. Dorsey, a former principal who served the school for more than 30 years and oversaw its integration into Brooklyn’s desegregated public school system in the 1890s.  Prior to desegregation, the school only served Black students and was named Colored School No. 1, as it was the first public school for Brooklyn’s Black children when it opened in 1827.

The Walt Whitman library opened in 1908 and was funded by a grant from Andrew Carnegie, whose philanthropy built hundreds of “Carnegie” libraries across the country.  Originally, the library opened as the City Park Branch but later changed it’s name to Walt Whitman in 1943, to honor the local poet’s 125th birthday.  The library is still open today and offers a wide range of services to the community.

Key Food Supermarket Aims to Open Mid-October

Keyfood_Clinton Hill_Brooklyn

Key Food supermarket (formerly Associated) at 490 Myrtle Avenue in Clinton Hill is not planning to reopen in September as we shared in August. The owners of the supermarket recently informed us that they are working towards opening in mid-October.

We’re really excited to be returning home,” shared Rudy Guzman, son of one of the owners who grew up working in the family business.  The reopened store will have a focus on “homemade,” particularly as it concerns the on-premises baking and cooking in the store’s prepared foods and catering section. Other changes to look forward to: an expanded meats section, a freezer section and an area for salad bar.

Anchor & Plow Opens in Fort Greene

Anchor & Plow in Fort Greene

Charlotta Janssen, an accomplished artist and pioneer in the Fort Greene restaurant landscape (Chez Oskar and Lola Bklyn), teamed up with Monir Gamany, a seasoned general manager to bring a new vision to the space at 387 Myrtle Avenue. Monir has worked with well known chefs and restaurateurs in New York City and together, with Charlotta, they are introducing a new farm and sea to table concept with a Mediterranean slant to a newly reshaped menu that unites a variety of palates.

We saw the opportunity and necessity to cultivate and bring a full dining experience where herbivores, carnivores, pescaterians and omnivores can sit down in a unique and shared connection of fresh refined and locally sourced wholesome fair. With Mediterranean flavors and spices in mind we wanted to bringing diverse palettes to the same table sharing charismatic cocktails and delicious wines.”

Staying true to our commitment of bringing fresh locally grown ingredients, Monir also designed a cocktail menu true to the spices and seasoning of the Mediterranean region. They chose small wine producers and expertly paired wines that compliment the Mediterranean flavors found on the menu. Anchor and Plow’s newest addition, Executive Chef Lazlo Beregszaszi, is a seasoned talent who will bring unique specials and new menu items regularly.

Anchor and Plow will be holding their grand opening on Thursday, September 10th, at 5pm and will be open 7 days a week for lunch, brunch and dinner.  They invite local carnivores, herbivores, pescatarians or omnivores to please come, to bring their critical taste buds and share thoughts on the new menu.  With the fresh addition of a seasoned team, this dynamic space with its romantic garden, not only provides a new staple restaurant to the neighborhood, but also a great event space that can host your next celebration or event.
