Our street beautification efforts tie together the district’s supplemental sanitation and tree guard projects.  Tree stewardship, street furniture repainting, tree guard maintenance, and ornamental tree bed planting are all part of our work to maintain a beautiful Myrtle Avenue.  We also work to remove excess sidewalk ‘clutter’ (i.e. illegal ATMs and obsolete utility boxes) and file 311 reports for a variety of issues including broken lights, bent signs, etc.

The focus on beautification began with graffiti removal.  With ongoing funds for graffiti and litter removal secured through the BID assessment, we expanded our beautification efforts to street tree stewardship and our award-winning tree guards and benches, which require special maintenance.  The tree guards themselves allow for planting of ornamental perennial and annual plants in tree beds throughout Myrtle Avenue.

Examples of Our Work:

• Requested and received 63 new street trees (planted by the NYC Parks Department), bringing district total to 265
• Installed 100+ custom tree guards and tree benches
• Pruned 175+ trees using Citizen Pruner certification
• Aerate and mulch 100+ tree beds annually, and water an average of 46 young trees each summer
• Repaint all street furniture (mailboxes, sign posts, etc.) each spring
• Plant hundreds of annuals in tree bends each spring and fall
