And the Greenest Block in Brooklyn is…

IMG_1382[1]…25th Street between Clarendon Road and Avenue D in Flatbush. We spent time there this morning in celebration of the 1st place Greenest Block in Brooklyn winners, the 300 East 25th Street Block Association. The 22nd Annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest, sponsored in part by National Grid, recognized green-space stewards from across the borough (including Myrtle Avenue). Congratulations to all of this year’s winners and thank you to all of the Myrtle Avenue merchants and partners that made our honorable mention possible!

New Chocolate Benches on the Avenue

IMG_1335[1]

The custom street tree guards and benches on Myrtle Avenue have taken quite a beating over course of the last few years. Cars, skateboarders, people with gum and heavy use have all played a role. This week we will be installing new chocolate colored bench boards at every bench on the avenue, as well as fixing some of the benches and guards that have been severely damaged. We hope you all enjoy the upgrade!

A very BIG THANK YOU to Patricia Gonzalez and all of our Fort Greene and Clinton Hill neighbors who stopped into or paused to take an Instagram photo outside of our Myrtle Avenue businesses who hosted live music on Thursdays during the month June.

The goal of the ‘Get Your Groove on [Here]‘ event aka the Groove Series was to help bring additional foot traffic to the businesses most impacted by the Plaza construction. Passersby during the Groove events were asked to take a photo and tag the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram — Patricia tagged us via Facebook and Instagram.

Thank you for shopping Myrtle Avenue, Patricia! Big thanks to you and all of our awesome neighbors for not letting anything keep you away from your favorite businesses. Congratulations on your $100 gift certificate.

Stay tuned for our next Plaza event series and keep supporting our businesses during construction!

TreEd on Myrtle: The Sidewalk as a Micro-Classroom

IMG_1234[1]

Here’s how public space can engage us and, at times, teach us a lesson or two: Over the course of the last six months we have been working together with key community partners towards a sustainable approach to ornamental plantings in street tree-beds. The plants are being watered multiple times per week, and we’ve begun to place our informational decals at those tree beds housing native plants. Take time to stroll Myrtle Avenue as summer cools off to autumn and try to find some of the species of plants that are described on each decal. You can even take note of the soil conditions and watch as the conditions change in 1, 2, 3 years’ time. We’ve learned a lot from this entire process and are now planning for additional plants this fall. We hope to see you out on the Avenue, learning together with us.

Sapolo demolition

The owners of Sapolo restaurant in Clinton Hill have begun demolition to prepare the site for a new mixed-use building.  Work crews were seen today removing windows and finalizing interior demolition within the existing one-story building.

In 2014, plans were filed to create a six story building on the site, which sits at the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Ryerson Street.  The new building will include 10 residential units and a 1,882 square foot ground-floor commercial space.  The current restaurant space measures only 1,691 square feet.

The owners of Sapolo restaurant are also serving as developers of the property, which they have owned since 1999.  It has not yet been announced if the restaurant plans to return to the site following construction.

This development marks the fifth building currently under construction along a four block stretch of Myrtle Avenue in Clinton Hill, between Hall Street and Emerson Place.  The new Myrtle Avenue Plaza is also under construction within this same area.  Find out more information on these various construction projects by clicking here.

Independence Day Weekend at Gnarly Vines

Gnarly Vines Fort GreeneGnarly Vines held what they are calling a ‘Patriotic’ Rosé Tasting earlier this week, including 2015 rosés from Charles & Charles. Stop in this weekend to pick up a few bottles to compliment your barbeque.

Please stop in and pick up a bottle of Charles & Charles or any of the other currently available rosés of other wines, including:

2015 La Spinetta, Il Rose di Casanova – Tuscany, Italy – $19

The Spinetta rosé is a light, crisp, delicate Tuscan blend of 50% Sangiovese and 50% Prugnolo. It has elegant floral aromas and pomegranate, peach and sour cherry flavors. Ab-fab on its own or with an array of summer salads, fruit and cheese.

2015 Bonny Doon Vin Gris de Cigare Rose – California – $17.50

Made by the iconoclastic, pioneering winemaker, Randall Grahm, who has been practicing bidoynamic viticulture since 2004, this rose is a Rhone blend of predominantly Grenache with a hefty dose of Mourvedre and then a little Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Cinsault. It’s refreshing enough for smoked trout but can also stand up to a killer BBQ.

2015 Charles & Charles Rose – Columbia Valley, WA – $14

A delicious blend of 61% Syrah, 12% Mourvedre, 10% Grenache 7% Cabernet Sauvignon 7% Cinsault, 3% Counoise with aromas of wild strawberry, cherry, subtle hibiscus and a touch of citrus with underlying dried herb, crushed gravel and mineral tones. And with a pink artist interpretation of the American flag, this is the most Patriotic rose ever… in a Gnarly, anti-Brexit, anti-Trump sort of way.  Enjoy with close friends!

2015 Pannonhalmi Apatsagi Pinceszet Rose – Hungary – $14

Hungarian rose – why not?  Apatsagi is 50% Pinot Noir, 30% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.  It has juicy flavors of strawberry and cherry with a hint of citrus fruit and good acidity. Perfect with a vegan ghoulash!

Story Time with Greenlight-Wildlife of New York: A Five Borough Coloring Book

Call for Designs: Who’s Your Doggy Storefront

12313626_10153770836219570_3049584033223385684_n

DEADLINE EXTENDED! DESIGNS CAN BE SUBMITTED THROUGH FRIDAY, JULY 22!

Put your artistic skills to work and submit a storefront sign design for Who’s Your Doggy on Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene.  The pet supply & services store is looking to replace its temporary sign, which has been hanging on their storefront since they opened in December at their new location at 354 Myrtle Avenue.

The long-time neighborhood store, which provides grooming and training classes for dogs and a full line of products for cats and dogs, is asking its loyal customers and neighbors to submit their ideas for a new permanent sign.  Store owner, Tracy Klonowski, says:

“We are excited to have our neighbors be a part of the new look and feel of our store.  Just as when we were planning to open the first location on Adelphi Street in 2006, I took a survey in Fort Greene park and asked what brands and products folks would like to see in their neighborhood pet store.  I compiled all the info I heard from neighbors and Who’s Your Doggy was born out of that.  I would like to call on our creative neighbors to make that happen again.  You’ve heard the expression, It takes a village to raise a dog store!”

All submissions will be reviewed and a winning design will be used when a permanent sign for the new storefront is installed.  The winning designer will also receive a $50 gift certificate to a Myrtle Avenue business of their choice!  The Myrtle Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) will assist with the final sign by providing a matching grant from the BID’s Storefront Improvement Program.  This grant program provides both long-term and new businesses on Myrtle Avenue with design assistance and grants, with the goal of improving the commercial district’s overall appearance.  Since the program began in 2006, over $73,000 in matching grants have been awarded to assist 90 storefronts.

How to Submit Your Design:

Designs can be submitted by e-mail to hello@myrtleavenue.org or dropped off at Who’s Your Doggy (354 Myrtle Avenue).  All designs must be submitted by July 22, 2016.

Final designs can be sketches or drawings on paper, or they can be submitted digitally in PDF or Adobe Illustrator/InDesign format.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) is inviting food and beverage manufacturers and cafe and kiosk businesses to attend an info session on Wednesday, June 29th at 6pm to learn more about opportunities available at BLDG 77.  This info session will take place at the BNY’s BLDG 92, 63 Flushing Avenue.

Food and beverage manufacturers wishing to learn more about the available 1,300 to 2,100 sf spaces; cafe businesses wishing to learn more about the available 375 to 600sf spaces; and interested kiosk businesses, please RSVP to kbohan@brooklynnavyyard.org to attend the info session.

The BNY released a Request for Expressions of Interest several months ago regarding the 60,000 sf ground floor spaces available in BLDG 77 for use in what will be a new production space and a public food hall, They are steadily attracting new tenants since the release, including NYC favorite Russ & Daughter as the Building 77 ground floor anchor tenant.

Building 77 is a sixteen story, 1940s former warehouse building located along Flushing Avenue at Vanderbilt Avenue in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. BNYDC is investing over $185 million to transition the one million-square-foot building into a vibrant hub for active manufacturing technology and design-based businesses. Beyer Blinder Belle Architects has designed the extensive renovation of the interiors and facade of the uppeer floors of the building. The full renovation of the Yard’s largest building will welcome more than 3,000 workers when completed. Building 77 will become the central point of the Yard and contribute to BNYDC’s mission to create quality jobs for the local community. This project will generate opportunities for existing businesses in the Yard to expand, and also meet strong demand for new businesses to locate within the Yard.

The fence currently separating Building 77 from Flushing Avenue will be removed to create a new public plaza and grand entrance into Building 77 and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Spaces will be delivered to tenants by early 2017.
