Cinco de Mayo – Must Eats

Cindo de Mayo is this week and we don’t want you to miss out on some of the best Mexican grub in the area. Here are some of our favorites on the Avenue.

Tamales with Salsa
Tamales

Castro’s tamales, made of masa (a starchy dough made of corn), stuffed with mole con pollo (a dark sauce over chicken) or rajas con queso (sliced poblano peppers with Mexican cheese), are a soft and steamy corn husk-wrapped delicacy that you won’t want to miss. Unwrap them and spice them up with the red and green salsa.

(718) 398-1459

SONY DSCElote con Crema
Mexican street food is one of the biggest food trends today and you will see why when you try the Elote con Crema from Los Pollitos. The chef is able to turn a simple piece of corn into the perfect antojito (a small plate to satisfy a little craving) with only cheese and Mexican mayonnaise. Grab napkins and indulge in this popular crunchy and messy food. Yes, kernels will get stuck in your teeth but it will be worth it.
Los Pollitos III, 499 Myrtle Avenue between Hall & Ryerson
718) 636-6125

Burritos IIBurritos
Tepango is a fabulous spot for delicious Mexican food at a great price. We think that you should try their raved-about burrito. Tepango’s burritos have been written about in the Gothamist’s Top 10 Burritos in NYC and The Daily Meal says, “this very well might be the city’s best burrito.”  Swing by and choose one of their 13 tasty filled tortillas.

Shop Within 1/2 Mile of the Closing Key Food Supermarket in Clinton Hill

Multiple Town Halls have taken place to address the closing of the Key Food Supermarket at 325 Lafayette Avenue in Clinton Hill. In recent community conversations with Seniors, to help shape our Age-friendly Myrtle Avenue initiative, we learned that this closing brings anxiety and frustration to the many older adult residents who use this store as their main Supermarket.

In response, the Fort Greene & Clinton Hill Community Food Council met to discuss strategies that will encourage nearby retailers to utilize this closing as an opportunity for them to serve residents needs.

In addition, the below map has been created to use as a resource for alternative shopping locations within 1/2 mile of 325 Lafayette Avenue. Please note that many offer van transportation to seniors.

Throwback Thursday with Author Henry Miller

Picture1

Here’s a throwback to the 1930s with local author Henry Miller, who once lived at 180 Clinton Avenue, near the corner of Myrtle Avenue.  It’s quite apparent that Mr. Miller was not found of Myrtle Avenue when he lived in the area back in the 1920’s.  In 1929, he and his wife left Clinton Hill, and Brooklyn all together, and became expats in Paris.

The above passage is from Miller’s novel Tropic of Capricorn.  The book was a prequel to Tropic of Cancer and was banned in the United States for over twenty years for being too “obscene.”

We’d like to think that if the author visited Myrtle Avenue today – maybe got brunch at The Runner or enjoyed a cupcake at Brooklyn Sweet Spot – he’d find a little more love for our beloved thoroughfare?

Tree Care on Myrtle Avenue

Aeration and Mulch

Spring tree care has begun!  Today, contractors began aerating and mulching 220 street tree beds along (and just off) Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.  This will take 2-3 days.

Aeration breaks up packed soil and lets oxygen and water to penetrate the soil.  Mulch adds organic matter, suppresses weeds, helps the soil retain water, and looks nice.

We will follow up this work with ornamental plantings in select tree beds and an extensive tree watering program.  Enjoy!

The “double-chip” mulch was courtesy of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.  Financial support for this work comes from the New York State Department of Environmental Protection’s Urban and Community Forestry Program.

Demolition of Former Myrtle Avenue Post Office Building Complete

The building that housed the former Pratt Station Post Office has been leveled, making one for a new six-story building.

The building that housed the former Pratt Station Post Office has been leveled, making one for a new six-story building.

Last week, the demolition of the one-story building at 504-520 Myrtle Avenue was undertaken in Clinton Hill.  The structure was demolished to make way for a new six-story, mixed-use building that will house ground-floor retail with apartments above.  The new building will have 20,000 square feet of new commercial space on the ground floor, 141 rental apartments on the upper-floors, and a 115-car parking garage on the lower level.

The demolished building formerly housed the Pratt Station Post Office, which has reopened at it’s new location a few blocks away at 609 Myrtle Avenue, on the corner of Kent Avenue.  In addition to the post office, the building at 504 Myrtle Avenue was also home to Fantastic Cleaners, which can still be found only two blocks away at 570 Myrtle Avenue. The Clinton Hill Metro PCS store also moved out of the former building, and is operating down the street at 436 Myrtle Avenue.

The new 504 Myrtle Avenue is being designed by HTO Architects and the developer is Madison Realty, which also oversaw the development of the adjacent 490 Myrtle Avenue, where Associated Supermarket will be returning.  Renderings of 504 Myrtle Avenue have not yet been released.

Community Forum for Age-Friendly Myrtle Avenue

In partnership with the New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) we spoke to over 200 older residents about how to improve life for older adults in Fort Greene & Clinton Hill as we aim to create an Age-Friendly neighborhood. This could could mean anything from working with local businesses to ensure that aisles are wheelchair accessible, or to offer senior friendly fitness classes like chair yoga.

In addition, over 50 Myrtle Avenue businesses shared existing programs and discussed new ways to create a safe, inviting, engaging experience within their businesses for older customers.

As a result, thirty older adult residents have joined the Fort Greene / Clinton Hill Senior Advisory Council and will work with us to create and lead initiatives to address common concerns around safety, transportation, senior-friendly opportunities and better access to services.

Join us for our Community Forum: Improving the Neighborhood for Older Residents

When: Monday, April 20th 2015
Time: 10-12pm
