Black Artstory 2016 Kicks Off on Myrtle Avenue

IMG_4601

Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership is proud to present the 4th Annual Black Artstory Month, titled SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED. SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED acknowledges the significant role that community building, cross-sector collaborations and collective actions have played within the Black Community in their pursuits for political freedom, cultural revolutions and social change through art. The FREE weekly performances, talks, film screenings, and public art experiences all take place on Myrtle Avenue, coincide with Black History Month and feature the work of 50 artists. Partners include: BLDG 92 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Leisure Life NYC, Pratt Institute, and University Settlement at Ingersoll Community Center.

SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED recognizes Arts’ ability to act as a medium and conduit to expose, question and inspire when other forms of communication or action fall short, will explore themes that include cultural, racial, gender and identity politics. Rather than framing the month’s programming /exhibition content around one theme, participants were invited to respond to a series of prompts that included but were not limited to: Obama’s 2008 ‘Race Speech’; the Young Lords/Black Panthers/ Black Lives Matter; Intersections of Art and Politics; the Role of Religion and the Church in Social Change Movements; Worker Assembly Lines; Protests; the Civil Rights Movement; Police Brutality; Collective Change and more.  Programs and exhibitions are curated by Daonne Huff.

FREE events will take place every Friday in February (7-9pm) and visitors can also enjoy the artwork any day at ART INSIDE/OUTSIDE, a self-guided Artwalk featuring artwork of 15 New York-based artists, on display at 12 independent businesses along Myrtle Avenue between Flatbush Avenue Extension & Classon Avenues and at BLDG 92 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. When star- crossed lovers meet and wed, the two families…
When a stream meets a river…
When various paints are spilled simultaneously on a canvas…
When a company joins forces with another…
When lines intersect…

This week’s pic is 313 Halloween’s photo of last year’s production of 20,000 Screams Under the Sea at 313 Clinton Avenue. Halloween 313 & Society for Clinton Hill have been producing theatrical extravaganzas in the neighborhood since 1994. This year the community partners are taking the classic children’s fantasy of Alice in Wonderland and creating their own diabolical version, Malice in Wonderland. Be ready to see Alice sent off into a fantastic new world, populated with a new cast of magical characters, who sing, dance, and fight off all manner of nasty beasts. This year marks the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Swing by the haunted graveyard and then catch the shows that begin around 5pm, and run approximately every half hour until about 9pm,  Crowds gather in the street in front of 313 Clinton Avenue, so get there early for a good spot!

Malice in Underland is one of the stops along the Society For Clinton Hill’s Annual Halloween Walk. Visit their website to check for details about the other neighborhood happenings.

Making it in NYC: The Era of New Manufacturing

This exhibit shines a light on the Maker Movement, and the “disruptive power of the artisans, techies and traditional manufacturers who represent “new manufacturing” here in New York City”. As the Maker Movement scales, could it provide the robust economy that creates the jobs we need in our city? Visit the exhibition at BLDG 92’s gallery space, and visit their calendar for related tours.

Exhibition: The End of Printmaking at Pushkin

Richard LebensonArt pairs well with sweet crepes, in our humble opinon! On view now through September at Pushkin Creperie Café: “The End of Printmaking” by Brooklyn based-artist, Richard Lebenson.  The exhibition was curated by Josh Stulman, and is presented by Brooklyn Art Review. From their site: “Lebenson’s artwork is known for its realist inspiration and interest in architecture, reflections, and portraiture. He often chooses to focus on quiet moments. Whether an illustration of a single house, a man looking at his reflection in a window, or a leaking faucet still-life; Lebenson’s imagery carries a somber tone that offer the viewer a point of reflection.” For more information, click HERE.

Saluting Local Myrtle Avenue Heroes on Memorial Day, Roy & Jack Vanasco

Vanasco_2

(photo: courtesy Roy Venasco, as shown on Fox News)

Four of the Vanasco brothers served in the military at the same time. Mr. Roy & Jack Vanasco (2nd from left and 4th from left, respectively), two of the brothers, and owners of All Appliance Parts, located at 610 Myrtle Avenue between Taaffe & Kent, were honored today at Cadman Plaza, along with other local veterans, for their service during World War II.

Born and raised in Fort Greene, on Clermont Avenue, with a long history with the former Myrtle Avenue Merchants Association, which pre-dates the BID; and a long, distinguished career of military and civic engagement — we salute you Roy and Jack Vanasco and the countless men and women who served and are currently serving.

Happy Memorial Day.
