Just Because Hair Therapy Salon Owner, Carol Thomas

This March Myrtle Avenue is celebrating Women’s History Month by honoring the women that help make our community great. Every day, these women strengthen the bonds within our community. Whether they’re collecting information for fellow community members or providing a gathering space for the community to come together. Their actions add up to something bigger. These women, and many more, are the community in Fort Greene/Clinton Hill. We are so proud to honor them during this special month.

Now in its tenth year, Just Because Hair Therapy Salon began with a call to Mom.

Salon owner, Carol Thomas writes, “How quickly time flies. 10 years came so quickly. It feels like just a minute ago when I made up my mind to open my own salon. The first person I called to get her thoughts was my Mom, and she gave me the go (as a matter of fact, her words were “just try it”). My mom’s advice meant a lot to me. I had to make it work, I had to make it perfect and I had to aim to give the best service that I could. That’s what I strive to do every day at Just Because.”

Just Because is known for all things hair health and beauty. Their “therapy approach” makes the health of the hair an integral part of the salon experience. The salon also hosts a complete schedule of health and wellness classes and workshops in addition to events like the annual fashion show that turns the sidewalk just outside the salon into a fashion runway!

Just Because philanthropy efforts throughout the year, a special Sunday series, where they provide hair styling, pampering and fun to women from local shelters or otherwise going through challenging times.

“I learned a lot of wonderful lessons from my mother,” Thomas writes, “and many had to do with how I treat my fellow man/woman. A lot of that is what helps shape the salon and our general philosophy and care.”

So this Women’s History Month, we’re giving thanks to all the mothers out there. Their good advice truly makes a world difference.

Just Because Salon is located at 141 Carlton Avenue, just north of Myrtle Avenue. To set up an appointment, call 718-722-7810

Black Artstory Month Continues All Year-Round

The fifth annual Myrtle Avenue Black Artstory month has come to a close, but you can continue to learn about and celebrate the neighborhood’s Black arts history year-round. Stroll the streets of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill while learning about the area’s rich Black arts history through a self-guided walking tour.  The Myrtle Avenue Black Artstory Tour is available as a podcast to download or can be listened to from any mobile device here.

Famous jazz trombonist Slide Hampton, writer Richard Wright, hip-hop group Digable Planets, photographer Wesley Fagan, are just a few of the names from this tour that highlights a diverse set of artist mediums.  While there are countless local artists who led incredible lives and merit attention, this tour focuses on eight different individuals who helped define the neighborhood’s lasting legacy as an enclave for Black artists.

Click here to view the tour route map and a list of artists included in the tour, or to listen to all or portions of the tour.

The tour is part of the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership’s annual Myrtle Avenue Black Artstory Month, held each February to locally celebrate Black History Month.  This self-guided tour is also part of the Partnership’s larger walking tour series, which includes guided historic walks through the Wallabout neighborhood.  View the events calendar to find more details and to register for an upcoming Wallabout Historic Walking Tour, held from May through October each year.

Standing Room Only at Fort Greene Park Community Meeting

The New York City Parks Department held a second community input session Thursday night to discuss the upcoming $7M improvements to Fort Greene Park. The local park is one of eight selected by the department to receive upgrades through the new city-wide Parks Without Borders program. Over 100 people attended the event on Myrtle Avenue at the Ingersoll Community Center to hear initial ideas from Parks and to give their input on how the money should be spent.

The program is solely focused on making improvements to the north side of the park, along Myrtle Avenue. Local residents and parks department discussed ideas for improving a number of areas, including sidewalks and seating along Myrtle Avenue, basketball courts, fitness areas, barbecue areas, the plaza at Washington Park, and the entrance at St. Edwards Street.

Missed the meeting? Suggestions and comments can still be shared by sending a message to the Fort Greene Park Conservancy or by calling the Fort Greene Park Director at (718) 722-3218.

Below are just a few of the ideas shared at the meeting:

Myrtle Avenue Street Furniture Gets a Refresh

We recently dedicated some time to removing graffiti from street furniture along Myrtle Avenue, and what a difference it made! Streetscape Inspector Raome Quinones, pictured, walked Myrtle Avenue to note graffiti locations and returned with the right tools for each job.

Myrtle Avenue street furniture like mailboxes, fire call boxes, and light poles look their best when free of stickers, spray paint, and other graffiti. Maintaining a graffiti-free streetscape requires ongoing efforts, and we aim to keep up with the graffiti as it crops up. In the meantime, enjoy the fruits of our labor: less graffiti on Myrtle Avenue street furniture.

Myrtle Avenue Residents Safe After Fire

A fire broke out Tuesday morning at 419 Myrtle Ave, home to the well established neighborhood restaurant, Putnam’s Pub and Cooker. While we are saddened by the damage, our hearts are encouraged by the warmth and immediate outpouring of love from neighbors and the merchant community. Thanks to the brave and swift work from the FDNY and NYPD the fire was contained and no one was seriously injured.

We’ve received word that Putnam’s plans to re-open as soon as possible. We’ll keep an ear out for opportunities for community involvement and post information as it becomes available. Thank you to to everyone showing their support, and thank you to our heroes at FDNY and NYPD.

For the most immediate information please stay tuned to our Facebook or Twitter page.

Final Fort Greene Park Public Input Meeting

The final opportunity for public input is fast approaching. Fort Greene Park is receiving $7M in funding to improve the park’s connection to Myrtle Ave, and we need to your input to make this project the best that it can be.

Join us, NYC Parks, and the Fort Greene Park ConservancyThursday, February 16, 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Ingersoll Community Center. At this meeting, NYC Parks will present new design ideas, other updates, and solicit your feedback.

The Parks Without Borders competitive grant process began in late 2015. Fort Greene Park was seen as a natural fit for the program, particularly with the walled off northern border. Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership then teamed with the Fort Greene Park Conservancy to reimagine parks connectivity with the sidewalk and surrounding streetscape, outlining several possibilities in this document.

The meeting is free and open to the public. We’re excited about this opportunity for Fort Greene Park and hope to see you there.

Quick and delicious options on Myrtle Ave just earned an extra stripe. Mexican restaurant Villa Pancho is now open at 472 Myrtle Avenue between Washington Avenue and Hall Street. Olé!

Deliciousness , HUGE variety for both meat eaters and vegetarians, affordability…AND the amazing salsa bar are among the attributes at this charming taqueria.

Beef, poultry, seafood, veggie tacos, burritos, nachos, taquitos and more, including churros ( – as one of our colleagues made sure to find out).

Villa Pancho is a new concept (actually renewed)  from the team behind Zaytoons.  Though we miss the former their Vanderbilt location remains open and tacos are a pretty good trade off.

Villa Pancho is located  at 472 Myrtle Avenue between Washington Avenue and Hall Street. Be sure to stop in and support this deliciousness.

The wait is over, taco lovers.

The Halal Spot is Open For Business

The Halal Spot, now open in Clinton Hill at 474 Myrtle Avenue.

The Halal Spot, a new eatery located at 474 Myrtle Avenue between Washington Avenue and Hall Street, soft opened this past weekend.

When you read the menu, you are going to swear you’ve tasted it before — but you’ll be wrong. It’s not only delicious but it’s made more nutritiously — wild salmon, grass fed beef and all natural hormone free chicken. And every combo meal of rice with meat, fish or poultry is served along with a side salad and your choice of any sauce, including white sauce (light garlic) or barbeque.

The restaurant is a family affair, owned by a set of brothers (Mike and Harris) and their cousin John (Ahmad).

“We soft opened on purpose to work out all of the kinks,” shared Harris. “One thing that’s very important to us is customer service, It’s dying art that we’ve revived,” he shared.

Stop in and enjoy The Halal Spot. It’s delicious, fast and affordable with lunch dishes averaging $8.

Help Us Reach Our Crowdfunding Goal

treed_plantingday-kids-in-pitii_2016-768

Students from Benjamin Banneker Academy learn tree stewardship and soil care in our tree beds along Myrtle Avenue.

Whether we’re creating community programming or advocating for resources, MARP is dedicated to improving the lives of our neighbors in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.  This year we served our neighborhood by securing much needed resources for food insecure familiesproviding opportunities for both employment and volunteerism, and connecting neighbors to each other to strengthen our community.

We’re proud of our accomplishments this year:

  • Along with a growing list of community partners, our Fort Greene & Farragut Fresh Pantry brought 150,000 lbs of fresh food to 900 families since September 2015.  For our Thanksgiving distribution alone, we gave out 150 turkeys and 13,000 lbs of sweet potatoes, bananas, apples, and stuffing to over 300 families. This was made possible with the help of over 100 local volunteers.
  • We celebrated the 10th anniversary of our Youth Entrepreneurship Mentorship Program, partnering with local businesses & organizations to mentor and employ 20 local youth in our small business district this summer.
  • We published the 2016 Senior Resource Guide and encouraged close to 40% of Myrtle Avenue businesses to offer specials to the 6,000 seniors living right here in Fort Greene & Clinton Hill, and we organized the very first Senior Resource Fair.
  • We offered free Neighborhood Tours and Community Bike Rides. We’re making sure our neighbors are informed of free resources in our community by regularly sharing information at community centers and meetings.
  • We assembled a unique partnership between MARP LDC, Brooklyn College, Mercy Home, and Benjamin Banneker Academy to provide an urban environmental education program and hands-on tree stewardship for local students through our “Tree Ed” program.

There is more work to do, and we need your help. Will you help us feed our neighbors, provide youth jobs, and build community through service opportunities in 2017?

A New Year’s Resolution to the Community

artboard-1-copyThe answer to the question, “What do you love about Myrtle Avenue?” isn’t quantifiable. We know we love it, but what makes it lovable is a myriad messy mix of people, things, ideas, and activities. And, you’re a part of it. When you go to the store, when you walk down the street, you become part of the bustling city we’ve all come to love. So, this New Years we’re asking community members to become a bigger part of Myrtle Avenue. Make your role on Myrtle Avenue purposeful, and make Myrtle Avenue yours. Because it is yours, and you are what there is to love about Myrtle Avenue.

As a BID, and a non-profit, we spend a lot of time trying to make Myrtle Avenue better. Whether that means picking up trash or improving safety for pedestrians, young people, and seniors, we spend our days trying shape Myrtle Avenue towards something sustainable, diverse, and enjoyable. But, we can’t do it alone, and we shouldn’t do it alone. One organization should not be responsible even to define what better is! So, we need your help. We need you, Myrtle Avenue needs you, to help shape it into the little piece of Brooklyn that it is, that it could be, or that it should be.

If you love that Myrtle Avenue is home to so many fantastic local businesses, become a frequent patron in 2017. If you, like us, think that Fort Greene Park is one of New York City’s best parks, become a bigger part of the park. Use it like it’s your park. Because it is! Volunteer with the Fort Greene Park Conservancy. Even better, get your kids to volunteer with the Conservancy. (A twofer!)

If you love your block just the way it is, show us why. Host a walking tour, or plan a street festival. We can help. Navigating the land of city permits can be daunting, but at Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership we have staff trained in this stuff. Yes, unsurprisingly, it takes a two degrees in city planning to figure out how to get a permit in this town!

If you’re an artist, contribute to the public art on Myrtle Avenue. The DOT has several public art programs this year, and we’re happy to help with your application.

Whatever your plan is, short of free parking on the sidewalk, let’s make it happen!

The beginning of a new year is often personal, and we spend a lot of time thinking about self -improvement. But, we can make public resolutions as well. In 2017, commit to making our neighborhoods a better place. Join us in our quest to support local businesses, diversity, healthy food options, a wonderful park, and our historic districts. Join us in helping to make Myrtle Avenue a place you love.
