Stop in to enjoy Wray’s Caribbean and Seafood Cuisine

Wray's storefront_for blog

It’s hard to track THE most popular dish at Wray’s Caribbean and Seafood Cuisine, owned by brothers, Alvin and Jelani Wray, because there are quite a few favorites.  The mac and cheese balls are said to be melt-in-your mouth delicious.  The codfish fritters and lump crab meat rolls are very fresh and delicious.

These siblings, though a different level of dining, get their food preparation gene from their dad, who was the first African-American head chef at the Waldorf Astoria in the 1960s.  Having gone through a bit of a branding change since the restaurant’s earlier life at Dee & Ricky’s Restaurant, the eatery still has maintained some of the favorites on the menu, but has expanded to include a lot of more seafood and Caribbean options.

Wray’s is located at 503 Myrtle Avenue between Ryerson and Grand and can be contacted at 347.619.6930.

Volunteers Address Erosion in Fort Greene Park

FGP Volunteer Erosion

Last week, New York Cares partnered with gardeners from the New York City Parks Department to landscape a hilly area of Fort Greene Park that is prone to erosion.  Led by Kean Eng, John Vei , Matthew Morrow and Carlos Romero, 25 volunteers built terraces and planted suitable plant species on a slope near the northeast entrance at Myrtle Avenue and Washington Park.

Erosion is a problem in Fort Greene Park.  During heavy rains, sediment and water frequently collect on the sidewalks around the park.  As the new plants get established, their roots will soak up water and reduce the amount of soil that erodes from the hill.

NYPD Registers Bicycles on Myrtle Ave

Bike Registration Event 2014-05-29 (8)
Last week, the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership and New York Police Department’s 88th Precinct joined forces on Vanderbilt Avenue at Myrtle Avenue to register bicycles.  NYPD registered 43 bikes during the morning commute.  One of Myrtle Avenue’s newest businesses, Myrtle Bagel, generously donated delicious coffee and fresh bagels.  By all accounts, the event was successful and the mood festive.

If a registered bike is stolen and then recovered by NYPD, the police can more easily return it to its rightful owner.  Registration itself involves filling out a form with bike details and serial number.  If the bike doesn’t have a serial number, NYPD Crime Prevention Officers can etch one.  If you would like to have your bike registered, simply visit the 88th Precinct at 298 Classon at Dekalb.  It’s FREE!

Myrtle Bagel is located at 410 Myrtle Avenue, between Vanderbilt and Clinton Avenues

New Buildings Slated for Myrtle Avenue in Clinton Hill

533 Myrtle Avenue - White Castle

Plans were filled yesterday for a new 5-story mixed-use building at 533 Myrtle Avenue in Clinton Hill, which will replace the existing White Castle restaurant.  The proposed building will house 27 residential units and 5,900 square feet of commercial space.  The plans indicate that the development will not take advantage of the available Inclusionary Housing bonus.  The building is being designed by Karl Fischer, who is currently working on other projects in the neighborhood, including 134 Vanderbilt Avenue, which will replace the Gulf Gas Station at Myrtle and Vanderbilt.  He is also listed as the architect for 100 Steuben Street, a few doors down from White Castle, where a new 8-story residential building will rise.

This is only one of several new buildings proposed or currently under construction on Myrtle Avenue in Clinton Hill.  Across the street at 490 Myrtle Avenue, the new mixed-use building that will house the returning Associated Supermarket continues to rise.  A new mixed-use building is also expected to rise next door at 504 Myrtle Avenue, where the Pratt Station Post Office currently is.  The post office is set to move a few blocks east to 609 Myrtle Avenue, at the corner of Kent Avenue.  Additionally, construction work is currently underway at the former Pratt Store on the corner of Emerson Place and Myrtle Avenue, which Pratt is converting into a state-of-the-art home for their Film/Video school.  Combined, all of the new construction will bring 144 dwelling units and 16,000 square feet of new retail space to Myrtle Avenue in Clinton Hill.

All of these new buildings will face the new Myrtle Avenue pedestrian plaza which is set to begin construction this summer.  The 25,000 square foot plaza will run between Grand Avenue and Emerson Place, replacing the existing service road that runs parallel to Myrtle Avenue.  Additional street improvement, such as new sidewalks, curbs, benches and trees will be implemented along Myrtle Avenue between Hall Street and Emerson Place.

NY1 Covers the Fort Greene Park Greenmarket Expansion

NY 1 covered the story of our partnership with GrowNYC to expand the Fort Greene Park Greenmarket in Brooklyn; view video here. We are thrilled to see two of our partners and allies from the Walt Whitman Victory Garden representing this call to action!   The goals of the expansion are to:

  • Lead to greater market participation by Fort Greene residents living north of Fort Greene Park, especially those living at New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Ingersoll and Whitman Houses, creating an opportunity to positively impact the health and wellness of thousands of families and seniors.
  • Inform what new products and price points need to be at the market in order to serve all Fort Greene residents.
  • Better connect residents shopping with benefits to existing neighborhood resources like the Greenmarket, possibly even influencing that market to evolve to better meet the needs of low-income customers over time.
  • Support City, State and Federal Food Benefit programs, ensuring sustainability of these essential food supplement incentives that allow all residents to access fresh, healthy foods.
  • Increase the revenue of participating regional farmers, supporting their ability to continue bringing local, fresh food to Fort Greene.
  • Decrease shopping congestion.

Earlier this month GrowNYC received CB 2 Transportation and Safety Committee support and next steps are in progress. We received 350 support signatures at market, nearly 100 on the on-line petition and support from multiple Elected Officials including Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, Assemblyman Joseph Lentol and Assemblyman Walter Mosley and numerous Resident Associations, local businesses, and Community Based Organizations. Thank you to all who have supported this effort!
