Pratt and middle school students create designs for under the BQE

For this semester’s Reclaim Works project,  Pratt students worked with middle school students and the Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project to focus on safety throughout a specific stretch of urban space under the BQE where Park and Grand Avenues meet in the Wallabout neighborhood.  Through examinations of place, community, and conversations, they all learned to design for a better quality of life.  The middle school students were the designers and the Pratt students guided them through the design process.

Check out the designs! View the student’s innovative concepts by clicking the pdf above, and vote for the one you think would have the most impact on safety here!

Reclaim Works began as an interdisciplinary course offered through Pratt Institute’s Art & Design Education department. Through a partnership with Citizen Schools and the Urban Assembly Unison School the course ran as a program to support a youth design initiative investigating real neighborhood issues through participatory planning improvement projects.  The goal of the project became two-fold, empowering local youth and giving graduate Pratt Institute students the opportunity to see how their skills in art and design can be used for positive community development.

Ingersoll Garden of Eden in The Guardian

Ingersoll Garden of Eden Gardeners circa 2009

We had the pleasure of meeting Urban Planning Graduate student Beatriz Pineda Revilla from the Netherlands last season as she worked closely with the Ingersoll Garden of Eden gardeners to learn their story and partnerships with New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Garden & Greening program and MARP to inform her graduate project about urban gardening and community organizing in New York City. Revilla’s work is now available for all to read in The Guardian,  “New York success story: growing the Garden of Eden in Brooklyn”   and via a preview of the soon to be published book “We Own the City” .

Congratulations to Ms. Revilla and the Ingersoll Garden of Eden gardeners – it is wonderful to see the hard work and dedication of this project shared and celebrated, bravo!

DOT Proposes Safety Changes for Park Avenue

Park Ave Title Slide from DOT

Following years of advocacy and community organizing by the Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project (MARP), the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) presented plans to improve traffic safety on Brooklyn’s Park Avenue between Navy Street and Flushing Avenue.  DOT officials unveiled their plan at the Transportation Committee meeting for Brooklyn Community Board 2 on Tuesday May 20, 2014 and the committee voted unanimously to support the proposed plans. Implementation is expected to occur in the fall of this year.

In 2012, MARP and Architecture for Humanity (AFH) released the Park Avenue Pedestrian Safety Plan, a set of proposals to improve pedestrian safety and calm vehicular traffic on Brooklyn’s Park Avenue between Navy and Steuben Streets.  The recommendations in the plan were developed over several years using information gathered at six public meetings, site surveys, and research.  There was also guidance from Community Board 2 and an Advisory Committee made up of representatives from local block associations, tenants associations, residential developments, community-based organizations, and city agencies, including DOT.  After the release of the report, MARP started a petition to enable a larger cross-section of the community to show their support for this plan.  Over 1,100 people signed.

DOT’s proposals include the following safety enhancements:

  • Reduce eastbound Park Avenue from two lanes to one lane, which will lower speeds and reduce merging conflicts.  Eastbound traffic volume is significantly lower than westbound and can therefore be accommodated by one travel lane.  This proposal was adapted from MARP’s plan.
  • Add stop signs to the exits of the parking areas under the BQE to reduce vehicle-pedestrian conflicts.  This proposal was taken directly from MARP’s plan.
  • Add bollards to select parking entrances, which will eliminate vehicle-pedestrian conflicts at those locations.  All parking areas will remain accessible by at least one entrance.  This proposal was adapted from MARP’s plan.
  • Reduce westbound Williamsburg Street from two lanes to one, which will reduce merging conflicts after Williamsburg Street turns into westbound Park Avenue.
  • Prior to this proposal, DOT implemented two minor safety improvements suggested by MARP and AFH.  DOT added 9 street lights along Park Avenue and added “daylighting” regulations to 7 locations.  Both improved visibility for drivers and pedestrians.

Stay tuned for more information about the implementation of these safety upgrades.

Support the Expansion of the Fort Greene Park Greenmarket

We have partnered with GrowNYC to expand the Fort Greene Park Greenmarket further north on Washington Park and closer to Myrtle Avenue to increase visibility and access for residents north of the park and decrease shopper congestion at market. In addition to the expansion, we will host a community education station on the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Washington Park with food and health programming for all ages and regular tours of the Greenmarket to inform the community about the products available and the fact that food benefits are accepted.

We hope the proposed changes will:

  • Lead to greater market participation by Fort Greene residents living north of Fort Greene Park, especially those living at New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Ingersoll and Whitman Houses, creating an opportunity to positively impact the health and wellness of thousands of families and seniors.
  • Better connect residents shopping with benefits to existing neighborhood resources like the Greenmarket, possibly even influencing that market to evolve to better meet the needs of low-income customers over time.
  • Support City, State and Federal Food Benefit programs, ensuring sustainability of these essential food supplement incentives that allow all residents to access fresh, healthy foods.
  • Increase the revenue of participating regional farmers, supporting their ability to continue bringing local, fresh food to Fort Greene.
  • Decrease shopping congestion

To date, we have received over 300 support signatures at market, support from multiple Elected Officials including Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, Assemblyman Joseph Lentol and Assemblyman Walter Mosley and numerous Resident Associations, local businesses, and Community Based Organizations.

Thank you to all for your support to  improve access to fresh, affordable food for all local residents!

Please sign the petition here and join us at the Community Board 2 Transportation & Safety Committee meeting on Tuesday, May 20th at 6PM .

Meeting details:

WHAT: Community Board 2 Transportation & Safety Committee

ConEd Shows Myrtle Avenue the Power of Giving

conEd1

Yesterday afternoon, seven volunteers from conEdison planted flowers inside nine tree guards along Myrtle Avenue, from North Portland to Carlton Avenues in Fort Greene.

Led by staff from the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership, the volunteers dove right in, helping to beautify public space and improve tree health.  They planted French Marigolds and Red Salvia (pictured) on the sunny side of Myrtle.  These vibrant plants did very well last year and we’re hopeful they will again this season.  On the south side, they planted Flowering Tobacco.  This is the first year we’ve planted this variety.  So far, they look colorful and happy.  The Partnership thanks conEd management and employees for their commitment to public service.

Plants and tools were provided by the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn BID.

Spring Planting in Full Swing

Spring Planting 2014

It’s Week Two of our spring planting season, and it’s very busy in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

Last week our landscape contractors aerated 115 tree beds along Myrtle Avenue and added mulch to over 200 tree beds.  This week we’ve added perennial plants and flowering annuals to approximately two dozen tree beds that are protected by our custom tree guards.  In what has become an annual tradition, a group of students from Greene Hill School helped plant annuals in four tree beds between Adelphi and Clermont.  Planting will continue next week.

Mulch was provided by the New York City Parks Department.  Tree bed aeration and mulching was supported by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Plaza Spotlight: Street Trees

Plaza Bosque View

With construction of Myrtle Avenue Pedestrian Plaza approaching, this post is the first in a series highlighting particular amenities and attributes of the design.  For the first post, we’ll look at street trees.

Currently, there are only 6 street trees on the south side of Myrtle Avenue between Hall and Emerson.  After construction, there will be: 9 Honeylocusts; 12 Pagodas; 6 Zelkovas (pictured above in the “The Bosque”), 5 Pin Oaks, and 8 Amelanchiers.  On the north side, 6 street trees will be added to the existing mix of 10 trees.  The net gain is 40 trees.

As fantastic as that will be, the trees’ roots will be given extra space to grow with Structural Soil.  Because of that extra space and the maintenance that our BID will provide, the city will plant larger trees than normal.  Generally, new street trees have a trunk diameter of 2-3 inches.  Many of the new plaza trees will have a diameter of 5-6 inches.  This will ensure a fuller tree canopy from day 1.

Stay tuned for more updates…

Myrtle Ave Spring Horticulture Planned

Tree Bed Planting

Spring is a busy time on Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.  In the following 3-4 weeks, the BID will be sponsoring and managing the following activities to green and beautify Myrtle Avenue:

  • Cultivate soil in 150 street tree beds.  This helps relieve compacted soil so tree roots can get air and water.
  • Add mulch to 200 street tree beds.  Mulch keeps weeds down and moisture in the soil.
  • Install 70 perennials (hosta and maiden grass) in street tree beds.
  • Install 2500 annuals (begonia, salvia, marigold, and flowering tobacco) in street tree beds.

Soil cultivation and mulch will be handled by contractors.  Look for volunteers and Myrtle Avenue BID staff planting perennials and annuals in early-mid May.

All street tree plantings will be within Myrtle Avenue’s custom tree guards and benches.

Tree care activities are supported by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Urban and Community Forestry Program.

A blend from the  Loire Valley made of 30% Chardonnay, 50% Melon de Bourgogne and 20% Sauvignon Blanc that definitely lives up to it’s name. Vibrant aromas of apples, peaches and melon follow through to the palate. The lovely round mouth feel and clean finish nicely compliment dishes featuring scallops, shrimp and mussels.

2013 Domaine de la Bastide Blanc ‘Figue’ – Cotes du Rhone, France – $14

One of our most-popular, crowd-pleasing whites, the Bastide ‘Figue’ is a medium-bodied blend of Viognier, Roussanne, and Bourboulenc with a silky texture, balanced acidity and delicious peach and nectarine flavors. One of the few whites that appeals to Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and even some Riesling lovers.  Pair with simple, fresh water fish or leek tart.

April on Myrtle Avenue

Fort Greene Park Flowers

Birds are singing and flowers are blooming across New York City, but especially along Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

King among the spring flowering street trees are large Callery Pear trees.  Myrtle Avenue is blessed with several mature pear trees, located between Vanderbilt Avenue and Hall Street.  Their bright white flowers dominate the streetscape, but will soon to be replaced by a thick canopy of dark green leaves that protect us from harsh summer sun.

Bulbs along Fort Greene Park (above), inside Trilok Center, and inside the Whitman and Ingersoll Gardens are also in bloom.  Stroll through the photos below then stroll down Myrtle Avenue to see for yourself.
