Pillow Cafe - grilled cheese - landscape for blog

Day & Night Deli’s grilled cheese sandwiches range from $1 to $2.75.  The one pictured below—grill toasted whole wheat with American cheese costs one dollar.  A little butter spread on each side before it hits the grill results in a fantastic bite and pure deliciousness. Customers can select from a variety of breads and cheeses, including swiss and provolone.

???????????????????????????????

El Cofre’s grilled cheese sandwiches are $2.50.  Customers can also select from a variety of cheeses and breads, including swiss, pimento and “Dominican cheese.” Pictured is a pressed roll with American cheese.  The key to the deliciousness at El Cofre—the press.  Every sandwich is heated in the sandwich press for a few minutes before it’s ready for the glorious grilled cheese finished debut.

Tree Guard Maintenance in Process

Tree Guard Maintenance

Starting this week, our partners at City1 Maintenance are taking care of 28 of Myrtle Avenue’s custom tree guards and benches in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

The urban environment is tough on trees… and tree guards.  Workers will be scraping rust off of the posts and artistic metal panels, then applying a special rust-prevention paint.

Later this month we’ll be performing routine tree bed care and then installing ornamental plants in tree beds along the Avenue.  Stay tuned.

Officials Discuss Vision Zero

Over the past week, Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams each hosted Vision Zero Town Hall meetings in Brooklyn.  The At each meeting, officials from the New York City Department of Transportation, Taxi and Limousine Commission, and the Police Department provided details about how each agency will be working eliminate traffic fatalities on the streets of New York.  Members of the public were also given an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback.

From the Vision Zero Website:

“This status quo is unacceptable. The City of New York must no longer regard traffic crashes as mere “accidents,” but rather as preventable incidents that can be systematically addressed. No level of fatality on city streets is inevitable or acceptable. This Vision Zero Action Plan is the City’s foundation for ending traffic deaths and injuries on our streets.”

What does this mean for Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, and Wallabout?  We are optimistic that DOT will use recommendations from our Park Avenue Pedestrian Safety Plan to propose safety improvements to Park Avenue between Navy and Steuben Streets.  We can also look forward to the safety features of Myrtle Avenue Plaza, including curb extensions and a reconfiguration of the service road entrance.

Raymond V. Ingersoll Residents & Community Partners Build a New Garden

Ingersoll Garden of Eden Gardeners circa 2009

Ingersoll Garden of Eden Gardeners circa 2009

In 2007 a group of eight Ingersoll residents, all women ages 60+, expressed their desire for gardening plots on NYCHA grounds to beautify the space and grow their own food. We were honored to assist.

A partnership with the NYCHA Garden & Greening team, Ingersoll grounds staff, MARP and the residents ensued and the creation of the Ingersoll Garden of Eden came to fruition in 2009. What began as 8 gardeners with 8 plots has grown to be 40 gardeners with 40+ plots. A long wait-list of  other residents interested in gardening has been growing over the years as they see the success of the Garden of Eden.

The core group of original gardeners responded to this demand and formed themselves as the Governing Body – maintaining a wait-list, applying for grants, meeting monthly and driving communication between residents and partner organizations. In 2013, the Governing Body applied for and received  the New York Restoration Project (NYRP)  “Gardens for the City”  grant, a program that aims to “help communities transform public spaces”.  The selection process identifies spaces with “committed community stewards that need the most help”.  NYRP then lends their materials, muscles and expertise.

The design process began in the winter of 2013 with NYCHA Garden & Greening staff assisting in the process – supporting the gardeners as they chose the new location and working with NYRP on the design of the new garden. Once all the physical logistics were completed we worked with the gardeners to prepare and disseminate the news that wait-listed residents will now have their own gardening space!

On March 27th, 2014 all community partners, as well as the youth of Green City Force, joined together to welcome the new gardeners and move fresh soil into 23 gardening plots. We look forward to seeing the plots become green over the year.

Take a look at the day in photos on our Flickr page and read the story from DNAinfo.

Thank you and congratulations to all community partners and Ingersoll Gardeners!

Myrtle Avenue’s Local Heroes Featured in SONYA Mural

Black Artstory- Local Heroes Artwork-2014-03-24 (11)

This past February, as part of Black Artstory Month, we asked our partners at South of the Navy Yard Artists (SONYA) to help us create a community mural featuring some of our very own ‘local heroes’. SONYA answered our call with this fantastic project featuring four of our very own local icons, painted in collaboration with community members, and inspired by the watercolor-style used by PS 20 4th graders in a project of the same name. Although this is a temporary mural project, these heroes have earned a permanent place in the pages of our neighborhood’s history book!

State Senator Velmanette Montgomery
Serving our district since 1984, Senator Montgomery calls Clinton Hill home. An educator by training, she continues to advocate for New York’s young people through efforts to reform of the State’s juvenile justice, foster care and adoptive care systems, and by by focusing on teen health. Not only is she a valued supporter of Myrtle Avenue, she is viewed as a role model and mentor by many local politicians that came after her.

Mr. McKie
Mr. McKie is the owner of Doo’s Barber Shop, which has been on Myrtle Avenue for just short of a decade and a half and is a neighborhood institution.  Mr. McKie emphasizes that he is not a barber himself, but he certainly steers the ship, opening the store after seeing a need for a barber shop. Doo’s has an excellent reputation for keeping neighborhood residents looking sharp with some of the freshest cuts around.  It’s a ‘family and friend affair’ at Doo’s, with nephew, son and long time friend and neighbor all part of the staff.

Gervan Duncan
Mr. Duncan was an active member of the Myrtle Avenue Merchants Association (pre-MARP’s existence), working hard towards creating an atmosphere where Myrtle merchants could thrive.  Mr. Duncan remains busy in the community, employing a staff who have largely been with him since the store first opened its doors almost two decades ago.  Duncan’s Fish Market has fresh fish and seafood catches on one side of the store and prepared foods like mac and cheese, steamed string beans and fried fish nuggets on the other. The image here is modeled after an iconic photograph of Mr. Duncan, featured in our Home Grown Locally Owned campaign.

Ms. Ruthie
The Ruthie’s mural depicts Ms. Ruth West, who opened up the first Ruthie’s restaurant in Fort Greene in 1968.  The eponymous eatery was opened at the strong urging of her children, who knew their mom’s gift in whipping up southern dishes she learned as a child in North Carolina, should be shared with the world.  Though Ms. Ruthie passed on just a few years ago, her name is still emblazed on Ruthie’s on Myrtle, owned by Ms. Ruthie’s son and daughter-in-law, John and Stephanie Monroe.  The restaurant continues to offer Ms. Ruthie’s recipes, serving up great southern classics, including  candied yams, potato salad, fresh fried whiting  and collard greens.

View the mural on Myrtle Avenue between Hall Street and Ryerson Street, near 489 Myrtle Avenue.

Photo Exhibition & Tasting at Tipsy

Our friends at FOKUS  present new prints from The Earth Warrior‘s photographic series, “A Ribbon Around a Bomb” at T/PSY in Clinton Hill,  opening this Friday, March 28th with a reception from 5pm-9pm. The event celebrates Woman’s HERstory month, with the artist and her works also featured in FOKUS’ ongoing online museum, #FOKUSonher. RSVP here.

“A Ribbon Around a Bomb” is a portraiture series, which examines the myriad of dualities featured in Frida Kahlo’s life + work and mirrors them against womyn in the artist’s own life. The sample of the series on view for this show contains 8 (of 21) digital color portraits + the accompanying written reflections of womyn who live passionately + courageously, exploring the ideas of femininity + fearlessness.

Stop by the T/PSY gallery any time from 5pm-9pm this Friday and enjoy a free wine tasting.

T/PSY is located at 584 Myrtle avenue at the corner of Classon Avenue.

National Grid Working on Myrtle Avenue

IMG_1070

In preparation for the construction of Myrtle Plaza, National Grid will be on Myrtle Avenue for 1-2 months laying new gas pipes.

The existing gas main under the roadway is too close to the sewer and water mains.  Before reconstructing the water systems, the gas main has to be moved.  National Grid will therefore lay gas pipes under the sidewalk, on the north and south side of Myrtle, between Hall and Classon.

The construction will temporarily impact vehicular and pedestrian access and create noise.  Sidewalk width will be reduced, crosswalks closed, parking removed.  At times, a travel lane may need to be removed.  Fortunately, the construction at each individual location will be short-lived.  After gas lines are laid, asphalt is used to temporarily cover the trench, before being replaced with concrete.  Then, a different team from National Grid will work with each property owner and business owner to create hookups to the new line.

National Grid cannot provide an exact schedule.  However, on the north side they plan on working east, from Hall Street to Emerson Place.

#TBT at the Pratt Station Post Office

Image Source: Pratt Institute Library, Digital Collection.

Ever wonder why the post office on Myrtle Avenue is called the “Pratt Station” post office?  The short answer: it used to be on Pratt’s campus in what is now known as Thrift Hall.

Thrift Hall, at the corner of Ryerson & DeKalb, was built in 1916 to house Pratt’s Thrift Association.  The Thrift Association was essentially a bank that promoted saving and money management among the neighborhood’s working class.

In 1940, the bank closed and the U.S. Post Office moved into their new “Pratt Station” location.  The name stuck with the post office when it made the move to its current location at 524 Myrtle Avenue in the late 1960’s. The post office is posed to move yet again and is currently looking for a new space in the neighborhood.  Learn more about their search or how you can give feedback on their move in this newsletter from Community Board 2.

There are plans to remove the building that post office currently leases and develop a multi-story building in its place.  A similar building is already under construction next door at 490 Myrtle Avenue, where Associated Supermarket will reopen, along with a TD Bank.
