Cardiff Giant Bar Opening in March, Clinton Hill

Cardiff Giant_Storefront _2015Named after a famous 1869 NYS hoax of giant proportions, there’s nothing hoaxy about the new, upcoming bar, Cardiff Giant in Clinton Hill. The space is the former home of Splitty, and is currently undergoing renovations in preparation for opening.

Owned by gifted, entrepreneurial Brothers Wiley, Ben, Seth and Mike, it’s the real deal, just like their earlier successes, Bar Great Harry, Mission Dolores, the Owl Farm and Glorietta Baldy.

What to expect? A focus on NYS grown and produced spirits and craft beers in an awesome atmosphere.

Also, expect an early March opening kick-off!

Check out the recent write ups on Cardiff Giant on DNA Info & BK Reader.

New, History Inspired Tree Guards On the Way

Submission of Tree Guard Designs

Myrtle Avenue is prepped to see more custom tree guard and benches installed later in 2016, each featuring new designs from local artists.  The new street furniture will be installed along Myrtle Avenue between Hall Street and Emerson Place in Clinton Hill.

Each of the eight new designs is inspired by a new a famous artist who once lived on or near Myrtle Avenue.  By using this theme in the call for designs, the new tree guards provide an opportunity to reflect the neighborhood’s rich artistic history,  Designers chose a variety of artists to be inspired by, including photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, jazz trombonist Slide Hampton, rock musician Vernon Reid, author Walt Whitman and singer/actress Josephine Premice.

Installation of the new guards and benches will begin in mid-2016, once construction of new sidewalks, as part of the Myrtle Avenue Plaza, is complete.  The project is funded by the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Business Improvement District (BID), with support from the NY State Department of Homes and Community Renewal’s New York Main Street (NYMS) grant program.

Since 2011, the Partnership has installed 87 tree guards, 40 of which have benches.  Click here to view existing designs that are currently installed along Myrtle Avenue.

Bar Bolinas Wants to Know Your Zodiac Sign

Bar Bolinas2_620x355

Hey Baby, what’s your sign?

Don’t think guys with psychedelic lounge jackets (or ladies with psychedelic outfits for that matter) sidling up to you, whispering that question in your ear, because Bar Bolinas is not that kind of place. Well, maybe sometimes it is, but that’s besides the point. And they DO want to know your sign.

Welcome to Cosmic Cocktails at the bar at Bar Bolinas every 3rd week of the month.

Every 3rd week of the month (keep an eye on their website for the schedule) Bar Bolinas partners with an herbalist and astrologer to come up with some zodiac-inspired cocktails.

Today’s the last day of Aquarius, so sorry water bearers, you’ll have to wait your turn again to inspire delicious libatious concoctions but hey, with 12 signs and 12 months in a year and a friend or two that you want to experience a cosmic twirl too, you can’t be disappointed.  Next up Pisces…then Taurus…then Gemini…then…then…you get the drift.

Stop in, and opt to sign up for an astrological reading to boot. Cheers!

Love that the restaurant is named for the coastal NoCal town of birth of 2/3 of the restaurant’s owners. The redwood bar and breezy, light decor is definitely a nod there. Yummm to the menu, can’t go wrong with delicious selections like fish, pork or steak tacos, Bolinas wings (miso sauce, cilantro), the fried oyster sandwich, greens and grains (poached egg, kimchi and sweet potato). Check out Bar Bolinas drink, brunch, lunch and dinner menus here.

Bar Bolinas is located at 455 Myrtle Avenue between Washington and Waverly Avenues. Call (718) 935-9333 for more details or to order.

SHADES by Yisa Fermin
Synopsis: SHADES is a new web series working to promote the visibility and representation of young artists and art administrators of color working in New York City. These video portraits examine the core beliefs, thoughts, and passions driving the subject’s endeavors and how their experience of race in the art world affects their work. SHADES will proudly premiere at this Black Artstory Month event.

Evoking the Mulatto by Lindsay Catherine Harris
Synopsis: Evoking the Mulatto is a multiplatform narrative examining black mixed identity in the 21st century, through the lens of the history of racial classification in the United States. Featuring filmed interviews with young artists and activists, photography, animation, and historical mappings, this interactive video art project seeks to address a relevant contemporary issue by glimpsing at its chronicle. www.evokingthemulatto.com

Too Little Time To Love by Esteban del Valle
Synopsis: Esteban del Valle recreated a 1963 Ford Galaxy built from wood, foam, cardboard, and covered in collaged images of the car itself. The Ford Galaxy functions as a set for a monologue comprised solely of quotes taken from speeches delivered by Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and Mahatma Gandhi. The monologue rearranged exact quotes to create a script that resembled one side of a heated dialogue, resulting in a narrative involving love, betrayal, violence, and murder. The scene unfolds over the span of a simulated car ride down Martin Luther King Kr. Boulevard in New York, and was performed by del Valle while wearing mask composed of the faces of all three historical figures combined. www.estebandelvalle.com/illustrations

Milking It by Fredgy Noel
Synopsis: Milking It is a quirky yet thoughtful film that challenges notions related to aging, race, and female solidarity. The story follows a presumably motherless young woman (Josephine) through three successive relationships, as she seduces men with the sole purpose of befriending their moms.

No Fats, No Femmes by Filmmaker: Jamal Lewis
Synopsis: No Fats, No Femmes explores desire, the politics of desirability, and the ways in which they are informed and shaped by media, pop culture, and capitalism through interviews, archival research, and performance. The film engages the phrase “no fats, no femmes,” which is popularly used on queer social networking/dating sites, through the personal narrative(s) of 5 Black and Brown queer, trans, fat, femme, and disabled people. www.jamaltlewis.com/nofatsnofemmes/

210 Myrtle Avenue, seen in 1940. Photo Credit: NYPL.

This historic photo from 1940 shows the block between Fleet and Hudson along Myrtle Avenue. On this block, a few decades earlier, lived William Nicholson who at the age of 29 in 1898 became the city’s first Black fireman. While breaking the racial glass ceiling could not have been easy, as evidence by his consistent assignment to menial tasks and not being able to respond to fire calls, he endured and ended up retiring from the department and received a pension.

Thank you to Brownstone Detectives for highlighting the story on their blog.

Sidewalk Closure Slated for Four Months

504 Myrtle Sidewalk ClosureFor the next four months, the sidewalk between 490 and 504 Myrtle Avenue will be closed due to construction, creating a detour for some pedestrians.  The sidewalk, which runs along the side of Key Food Supermarket, serves as a connection for many pedestrians coming to Myrtle Avenue from the Willoughby Walk Co-ops and Pratt Institute’s campus.

The sidewalk, which enters Myrtle Avenue at Ryerson Street, is closed due to construction at 504 Myrtle Avenue (site of the former Pratt Station Post Office), which is currently being redeveloped.  The pedestrian walkway will return in a few months, after major construction activities are completed.

In the meantime, residents looking to access Myrtle Avenue from the south can either walk one block west to Hall Street or head east and enter Myrtle Avenue on the west side of Blick Art Supply store, at Grand Avenue.

Connect with the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter to hear the latest news on local construction activity.

Got ideas for park improvements?

IMG_0269

NYC Parks Departments Parks Without Borders initiative is asking for community input on local parks utilizing an online tool. Residents can recommend parks and improvements to be funded with PWB capital dollars, keeping in mind Parks’ goal of better integrating parks with surrounding communities through improvements at the borders.

The north side of Fort Greene Park is an important public space for the Myrtle Avenue community. We’d like to see even more space for barbecueing, even more picnic tables, even more benches, even more workout equipment. The Myrtle Avenue side hasn’t seen investment in quite some time in terms of capital dollars, and we think it deserves it, and so do the residents that use it!

We encourage you to visit the website, and submit your support for the Myrtle Avenue side of Fort Greene Park, or any park you feel deserves attention via this initiative!

Black Artstory 2016 Kicks Off on Myrtle Avenue

IMG_4601

Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership is proud to present the 4th Annual Black Artstory Month, titled SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED. SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED acknowledges the significant role that community building, cross-sector collaborations and collective actions have played within the Black Community in their pursuits for political freedom, cultural revolutions and social change through art. Spice & Grill Expands to Clinton Hill

Spice and Grill

A Grand Opening event is planned on this coming Wednesday, February 3rd for the new Nepalese and Indian restaurant Spice & Grill, which is located at 441 Myrtle Avenue on the corner of Myrtle and Waverly Avenues. The grand opening celebration begins promptly at 6pm and will continue until the generous spread of food runs out. Afterwards and for the entire grand opening week, customers can enjoy discounts on meals, 20% off on the day of and 10% off on the other days of the week. Local elected officials and the community will be invited to join in on the celebration with words of welcome.

The new Clinton Hill eatery is not the first enterprise for father-son entrepreneurs, Bed and Bikash Karel, as they have successfully operated a Nepalese Indian Restaurant in Ridgewood, Queens at Seneca and Myrtle Avenues for three years.

The primary difference between the two restaurants is that while the Queens location boasts a large 120 menu items, the Myrtle and Waverly location has a markedly more laid back vibe and a smaller, more select menu with emphasis on grilled Indian menu items and Nepalese street food, such as mini samosa chat (tangy samosas with freshly cut sweet red onions, chili and coriander), momos (bitesize dumplings served with spicy tomato and sesame sauce), chatamari (rice crepes topped with lamb and spicy sauce) and sekuwa (chicken skewers with peppers, nutmeg, lime zest and yogurt). The grand opening event will feature many of the finger foods from the restaurant’s menu.

“We’ve already gotten a lot of positive feedback in the nearly 4 weeks since we’ve been open and we are overjoyed to be here,” enthusiastically shared Bikash. “I was raised on Myrtle Avenue (Queens) and my dad’s roots are in Khatmandu — we are excited to bring our cuisine to Clinton Hill.” The restaurant also boasts what Bikash and his dad describe as “the best chai in New York City.” It is delish – stop in and try it.

Spice & Grill is located in the former home of Mark’s Gourmet Burgers. The scaffolding which currently covers much of the storefront will be deinstalled soon. The building’s property owner is current is currently doing work in the upper floors.

The business has a beer and wine license.

Their chef has more than 30 years’ experience at national and international venues, including former work in Japan and Brazil.

Taken from the Myrtle Avenue Elevated train, this photo captures a slice of Clinton Hill along Myrtle Avenue, between Clinton and Vanderbilt Avenues.  Signage for Raiders Cleaners is seen the façade of 414 Myrtle Avenue, where Mr. Coco operates today.

A laundry cleaning and dying business operated at this location for more than 60 years, beginning with Raiders Cleaners first opening in the 1940s.  The original business was then sold in the late 1950s (when “New” was added to the name), and was run by a local Fort Greene family for about 50 years.  New Raiders Cleaners closed in 2008.

This photo, which dates to 1969, was taken by Patrick Cullinan shortly before the Myrtle Avenue El came down.

Mulchfest in Fort Greene Park

mulchfest 2016

It’s that time of year again! NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, NYC Department of Sanitation, and GrowNYC will be recycling holiday trees into wood chips at Fort Greene Park. These wood chips are used to nourish trees and plants on streets and in gardens citywide. You may also take a bag of mulch home to use in your back yard or to winterize the street trees on your block. More than 30,000 trees were tree-cycled last year! Here’s how you can ‘chip in:’

First, remove all lights, ornaments, and netting from your holiday tree before bringing it to the park. Bags will be provided if you wish to take some mulch home for free. You can bring your tree to the northeast entrance to Fort Greene Park (at the corner of Myrtle Ave & Washington Park) on January 9th and 10th from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

The event is co-sponsored by the Fort Greene Park Conservancy, who will be serving holiday treats and hot chocolate.

Throwback Thursday: Farmer in the Deli

Farmer in the Deli, 1999.

Farmer in the Deli, 1999.

Farmer in the Deli, also known as Lauro’s to many locals, is seen here in this 1999 photo with a now retro-looking sign.  The deli has become a local institution, serving Fort Greene for decades.  The deli recently installed new signage (see below) along with a new storefront.  In 2011, the owners expanded their operations along Myrtle and opened a Clinton Hill location, simply named Farmer in the Deli II, at 543 Myrtle Avenue.

Most of the neighboring buildings seen in the photograph have since been demolished, making way for the multi-use building that now houses Greene-ville Garden and Walgreen’s.
